The screams of a dozen teens cut through the darkness as a leather-faced goon wielding a chain saw chased them out from the woods past their cars. They were just a few of the daring souls who crept along the Trail of Fear, now in its 10th year and at a new location. The trail’s creator, Bobby Hyler, spent three months creating an experience that he’s sure will spook the toughest of the bunch. Originally located off Startown Road, the “Startown Haunted Trail” has moved to the woods behind Fred T. Foard High School and been renamed. |

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. That’s the message the Newton Police Department hopes to convey to local citizens as the number of reported scams picks up across the area. County residents are getting phone calls and e-mails from people posing as members of the Federal Trade Commission, bank and credit card company employees, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and everything in between. Meanwhile, others are receiving checks in the mail for secret shoppers and lotteries they never entered. Don’t be fooled. The majority are scams, said Newton Police Chief Don Brown. |
