Citizens using sidewalks in downtown Newton will soon have a smoother walk, thanks to a specially patented process and a $31,000 investment by city leaders. Throughout the downtown area, Newton officials have identified 411 "trip hazards" where pedestrians could stumble, trip or fall. The hazards occur where sidewalk tiles have buckled or have become uneven between tiles and curbing. Problems in the sidewalk create uneven places that are one-quarter inch up to more than an inch high. "That is another safety hazard, and another risk liability for the city," said Newton City Manager Todd Clark. "I felt like it was worth an expenditure of funds." |

After Newton closed its informal skate park this week, young people who used the facility staged a protest Thursday afternoon.
"They wanted to try to get us off the street, so they gave us a spot to skate," said protester Caleb Cordes, "and now they just take it away." Due to liability concerns raised by insurance companies in November 2007 and again in July, Newton City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to close a skate park area at the Catawba Valley Farmer's Market area. |
