The woman known nationwide as the Gourd Lady added another chapter to her legacy in Catawba County Tuesday when the Adrian L. Shuford Jr. YMCA named its community in her honor.

Margaret Sparkman, 93, attended the event thinking one room in the building, the senior center, was named in her honor. As YMCA staff unrolled the banner declaring the building the Sparkman Community Center, the look on Sparkman’s face said everything: She was speechless.

“It’s the greatest honor of my lifetime,” Sparkman said. “I feel so humbled. I can’t express my feelings. I just can’t believe this.”

ImageAlmost a year after two former Domino's employees sparked an Internet uproar with a video showing them tampering with food at a Conover franchise, one of the cuplrits pleaded guilty Tuesday.

Michael Setzer entered an "Alford Plea" on a food adulteration charge before Judge Gentry Caudill. His attorney, Shawn Clark, said, the guilty plea for the Class I felony means Setzer takes responsibility for his actions, but doesn't admit any guilt.

"It basically says that he believes the evidence is substantial enough (for him) to be convicted at trial, so it is in his best interest to plead guilty," Clark said of the Alford Plea. "He is not admitting he did anything wrong."
