“This is a big hole,” Catawba Valley Community College President Garrett Hinshaw told county commissioners Tuesday.

The sinkhole that opened up July 27 in a drive and parking area at the school's main campus on U.S. 70 is also coming with a hefty price tag, Hinshaw said.

With estimates of up to $1.5 million to fix the sinkhole and replace a deteriorated corrugated pipe that may have led to the problems following heavy rains, Hinshaw said he's hoping for funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and from an insurance claim on the pipe.
