Pulling ahead 21-0 after the first quarter, Appalachian State cruised to a 55-14 victory against visiting Coastal Carolina on Saturday in Boone.

The Mountaineers tallied 684 yards in the contest — their most in a game since the 2009 season.

"I'd say we played well," said ASU coach Jerry Moore. "We have huge respect for Coastal. I can't tell you how hard we practiced and prepared for these guys. We had a hot hand today. I would like to say we were prepared. We had a great week."

Running back Steven Miller recorded 202 of those yards — a career high for rushing — and scored twice. His 202 yards were part of a 399-yard rushing performance for Appalachian State.

"He's learned to be a slasher," Moore said of Miller. "He slashes through the line to what I call the second level and then he starts chopping his feet and making guys miss at the linebacker level. He's also a year older and a year more mature, which is the reason he is having the year he is."

The Mountaineers also had success through the air, as quarterback Jamal Jackson three for 285 yards and combined for four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing).

"When you have a balanced attack, it's hard to put the focus on one aspect of our gameplan," Jackson said. "When we're balanced like this we are going to be hard to beat."

Aramis Hillardy led Coastal Carolina (2-3) with 145 passing yard and two scores.

Appalachian State hosts Elon (2-3, 0-2) next Saturday in Boone for the Mountaineers annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
