BOONE — Appalachian State has hired Oklahoma State assistant Billy Jones as its new baseball coach.

The school on Friday chose Jones to replace Chris Pollard after he left last month to take over at Duke.

Jones spent the past eight seasons on the Cowboys' staff. Before that, he was an assistant at North Carolina State from 2002-04, and he also has coached at Oregon State and Arizona State.

The Mountaineers are coming off a season in which they went 41-18 and reached their first NCAA tournament since 1986.
