Adam Baker may agree this week to a plea deal on felony charges he faces in Catawba County.
Baker's attorney, Mark Killian, said in Catawba County Superior Court on Tuesday that he is working with the district 25 attorney's office on a plea agreement on the charges. A plea hearing on Baker's charges is expected as early as today.
Baker, the father of the 10-year-old, Zahra, who was brutally murdered in 2010, is charged in Catawba County with identity theft and obtaining property by false pretenses. Baker's charges are unrelated to Zahra's murder.
Killian would not comment Tuesday about the agreement. He said he does not expect a pending agreement to affect his client's charges in Caldwell County.
Baker faces two counts of communicating threats, assault with a deadly weapon and failure to return rental property in Caldwell County.
Adam Baker is the former husband of Elisa Baker, who was sentenced in September 2011 to 15-18 years for murdering Zahra.
According to media reports, Elisa Baker is expected to appear in U.S. District Court on Thursday on federal drug charges. According to court papers filed last month, she has agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to distribute a mixture that contained painkillers oxycodone and hyrdocodone, and the anti-anxiety drug alprazolam. The conspiracy charge is punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
Elisa Baker was originally indicted on seven federal drug charges, but a reported plea agreement calls for prosecutors to dismiss six of the charges.
Clark case continued
Shawn Clark, an ex-district 25 attorney Republican primary candidate and Hickory-based lawyer, is expected to next appear in court Feb. 6 on charges of extortion and obstruction of justice. An administrative hearing on the charges was continued Tuesday.
Clark is accused of issuing threats and false affidavits to cover an alleged sexual relationship with a former client, Tiffany Turnmire, in 2009. The accusations against Clark surround a series of back-and-forth court battles between Clark, Turnmire and Turnmire's husband, Tim, a few months prior to Clark's May 2010 district 25 attorney primary.
Other cases pending
Cases involving former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield and accused murderer Everette Hewitt are in holding patterns, pending additional information and their attorneys' abilities to appear in Catawba County court.
Hewitt is charged with murdering three people in March 2011 in a mobile home shooting in Conover.
Mayfield is charged with possession of methamphetamine, a charge that could carry a maximum prison sentence of 12-15 months, according to Catawba County court records. More charges are expected to surface for Mayfield, whose home and property authorities searched twice last year and found property stolen from Lincoln, Iredell and Caldwell counties.
