9-0 run pushes Newton-Conover past Maiden

The Newton-Conover boys basketball team (10-8, 5-3) opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run Friday, lifting them to a 62-56 win against the Blue Devils — their second win of the season against Maiden.

The Red Devils' 9-0 run was their second of the game. The team also had a 9-0 run in the second quarter of the game.

Kevin Holloway led N-C with 16 points, while Tyoun Shuford pitched in 12 points.

Matt Johnson scored a game-high 20 points for Maiden (6-10, 2-6).

Behind a combined 64 points from Taylor Petty (23), Lanecia Williams (21) and Shynese Whitener (20), the Lady Red Devils improved to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A.

Newton-Conover led 29-6 after the first quarter and 52-13 at halftime.

Rachel Pritchard led the Lady Blue Devils (7-10, 1-7) with nine points, while Sabrien Gaither pitched in seven points.
