Looking for a fun alternative to standard 5K races? Check out the 2013 Vineyard Stomp 5K Series in the wine country of Surry County.
The cross country runs take place in vineyards, traversing the unique terrain of various wineries.Three of the four races are still accepting entrants.
The next event in the series is Aug. 24 at Olde Mill Winery in Mount Airy, followed by a Sept. 28 race at Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery in Elkin. The series wraps up Oct. 26 at Round Peak Vineyards in Mount Airy.
Each race of the Vineyard Stomp is open to runners of all ages and abilities and conducted on dirt and grass trails in and around the vineyards. The nature of these trails is to provide a varied 5K experience that includes hills, off-camber trails and uneven surfaces.
Timing is done by microchips, with runners competing for awards in their age group and for overall finish in each race. Awards also go to the top finishers in the entire series.
Post-race festivities include live music, food, a wine tasting from the host winery and the awards ceremony. Proceeds of each race benefit a local charitable organization.
For participants age 21 and over, a new perk has been added this year. Participants receive a bottle of wine from a Surry winery for each race completed.
The Aug. 24 race at Olde Mill begins at 10 a.m., and the final two races at Grassy Creek and Round Peak start at 11 a.m. Onsite registration begins two hours before race time.
Pre-race registration for age 21 and over is $28 per race, while race-day registration is $32. Runners under the age of 21 pay $15 per race and have a race-day registration fee of $20.
