31 county wrestlers ranked in the state
The latest individual state prep wrestling polls include 31 Catawba County athletes ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.
The Retrorankings.com lists include 16 area wrestlers in the 2A ranks and 15 in the 3A ranks.
Four wrestlers from three schools are also ranked atop their respective weight classes. They include Newton-Conover’s Ian Canrobert at 106, Foard’s Caleb Griffin at 120, St. Stephens’ Ian Martin at 138 and Foard’s Hayden Albert at 160.
Canrobert (40-2) and Martin (42-2) also rank in the top 10 in the state in wins in their classes. Canrobert is eighth and Martin is second.
Tigers, Red Devils secure title shares
Two county wrestling teams — Fred T. Foard and Newton-Conover — have already locked up at least a share of their conference titles.
The Tigers are 5-0 in the Northwestern 3A/4A, with one conference match left on their schedule. They are one match up on St. Stephens, who is 5-1 in the NWC. The Tigers defeated the Indians at home, 42-35, on Jan. 10.
The Red Devils locked up at least a share of the conference crown with their 6-0 record. The two teams below Newton-Conover in the CVAC wrestling standings — Bandys and Maiden — lost to the Red Devils earlier this season.
Preliminary brackets revealed
Retrorankings.com unveiled its preliminary dual team playoff brackets.
Foard, the current No. 1 seed in the Northwestern conference, is slated to take on the Mountain Athletic conference’s No. 1 team.
The conference’s second seed, St. Stephens, would likely be a wild card taking on either the Western North Carolina Athletic or North Piedmont conference champion.
The Catawba Valley 2A champion, likely Newton-Conover, will take on the Mountain Valley conference No. 1.
The No. 2 CVAC team faces the No. 1 Central Carolina conference team.
