The Bandys girls basketball team outscored Maiden 43-21 in the second half to pull away for a Catawba Valley 2A victory.
Leading the way were Taylor Sigmon and Jesse Story. Story scored a game-high 24 points, while Sigmon scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
The game was moved from its regular start time to 4 p.m. due to impending weather. Bandys coach Beth Queen felt the change in game time seemed to affect some of the players on the court.
“It was not a normal game time routine,” Queen said. “You leave school immediately, get on the bus, rush over here and you have 10 minutes to warm up. They were not used to that.”
It was a close game in the early going with the largest lead for either team being four points for most of the first quarter.
Taylor Sigmon powered her way to a great rebounding performance early for the Trojans (11-2, 3-1). She collected seven rebounds in the first half, giving her many scoring opportunities. That led to seven first half points.
“Taylor does such a great job for us on the boards and her defense under the basket,” said Queen said. “She is such a critical part of what we do. Sometimes we will get 10 to 15 points out of her on occasion, but I can’t replace what she does on the blocks defensively and rebounding.”
Also giving the Lady Trojans opportunities were four first quarter turnovers by the Lady Devils, which were created off of a tough full court press and pressure defense.
A 3-pointer by Chelsey Queen before the end of the first quarter made it a 19-12 lead for Bandys.
The Lady Blue Devils tried to pull back into the game in the second quarter with a tremendous effort by Sabrien Gaither. She scored a 3-pointer and went to the foul line twice.
Because of Gaither’s performance, the lead was down to just four, but Bandys closed the first half strong. Again, it was rebounding and the strong press that kept the lead in the Trojan’s hands.
Maiden committed five turnovers in the second quarter and Chelsey Queen scored two 3-pointers in the quarter to push to lead to 36-21.
“We made a little run in the last two minutes,” said coach Queen. “I was really hoping we had one more minute in the half because we had a good momentum going there.”
Entering the third quarter, Bandys came out strong and refocused. They scored the first nine points of the second half on their way to a 24-point third quarter.
“I think we were a little out of it when we got here just because we started the game earlier,” Sigmon said. “Once we got our jitters out and got warmed up, we told each other to calm down and play our game.”
After picking up two early fouls in the first quarter, Kailey Punch returned to the Trojans’ lineup and scored seven points in the third quarter. Jesse Story added eight points in the huge quarter for Bandys.
Gaither continued to power the Lady Blue Devils down the stretch. She fought hard for layups and got to the free throw line. She finished with 13 points in the game.
Her effort was for naught however, as the Trojans outscored the Blue Devils 19-7 in the fourth quarter to further distance themselves.
Chelsey Queen finished with 16 points and six assists for Bandys and Madi Story scored 13 points and collected seven steals.
