1 dead in I-40 crash

A woman is dead Wednesday after her car crashed into a guardrail on Interstate 40.
The woman was traveling eastbound at the 138 mile marker at 4:51 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle, struck a guardrail and flipped, said Sgt. T.M. Daniel, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The woman, whose name wasn't released at the scene, wasn't wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. She was ejected from the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, which landed on the westbound side of I-40 several yards from where it struck the guardrail.
Emergency personnel arrived on site and requested a helicopter to transport the victim, but she was later pronounced dead on the scene.
The woman was the only person in the car at the time of the crash, and no one else was injured.
Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and asks for anyone with additional information about the crash to contact them at (828) 466-5500.
A witness to the crash told troopers he saw a gray and black pickup truck stop at the scene of the crash and leave. Daniel said investigators want to talk with the driver of the truck to learn what the driver saw when the incident occurred.
