Giant strides: Bumgarner reflects on his career, future

From a small town boy to a big league pitcher, Madison Bumgarner has already achieved a lot in baseball at a young age.

The former South Caldwell High School standout turned San Francisco Giants ace continues his baseball journey and hopes to leave his mark on the game.

Tuesday night's Hickory Post 48 game cancelled

Tuesday night's American Legion baseball game between Hickory Post 48 at Gastonia Post 23 in Sims Park has been cancelled.

The game will not be made up.

Post 48's game on Sunday with Wilkes County has also been cancelled with no make-up date.

Hickory (8-5, 4-4) returns to play on Wednesday night for a road contest against Henderson County Post 77 at East Henderson High School.

Mitchell trying to become X factor for Hickory Post 48

When you look up and down the list of names on the Hickory Post 48 roster, all of them are familiar to many, except for one — MacLindsay Mitchell.

While he may not be known now, Mitchell could be an X factor for Post 48 coming down the stretch.

Girls basketball coach Brad Mangum is leaving Fred T. Foard for a former rival high school of the Tigers.

Mangum was approved as a high school teacher on Monday by the Alexander County School Board and also named the next girls basketball coach at ACHS.

Mangum said there was one main reason for his decision to make the coaching move.

Punch, Yount reflect on 1968 College World Series run

Forty-five years after helping N.C. State make it to the College World Series for the first time in program history, Newton natives and former Wolfpack baseball players Dennis Punch and Gary Yount reflected on their team's remarkable run to Omaha.

Punch and Yount were two of three Red Devils who played in back-to-back College World Series in 1967-68.

Bumgarner blanks Braves, tosses two-hitter in 6-0 win

Madison Bumgarner was magic on the mound Friday in Georgia in front of 40 of his closest family and friends.

The former South Caldwell High and current San Francisco Giants pitcher tossed a two-hit gem in a 6-0 victory against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

Bumgarner spoke after Friday's game that he knew "after the first out" of his potential perfect game and no-hit performances.

Six-run fourth lifts Hickory over top of Ashevile

Despite having nearly a week off from competition, Hickory Post 48 picked up where it left off on Friday.

A six-run top of the fourth lifted Hickory to a Area IV West Division victory against Asheville.

Post 48 improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in divisional games.

Cowboys teams competing in Superbowl on Saturday

The Conover Cowboys youth football organization is competing for titles on Saturday.

The Cowboys varsity, junior varsity and mighty mites teams play Saturday at Rocky River High School in Mint Hill to try and win a trio of National Spring Youth Football League (NSYFL) championships.

The Post 48 pitcher and first baseman has stepped up when his team needed him the most and became a quiet leader on the Hickory squad.

Lucas has battled stuttering from a very early age.

Bandys' Harvey expected to sign with O's next week

Bandys' Hunter Harvey is expecting to sign a contract with the Baltimore Orioles next week and start his journey through the minor league system.

The 6-foot-3 pitcher was taken No. 22 overall by the Orioles in last Thursday's Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

Harvey said on Wednesday that he expects to be the last of the 41 players drafted by Baltimore to sign their deal.
