No. 3 Red Devils blank Bears, move to 11-1

The Newton-Conover boys soccer team maintained its dominant play Monday on the road against Bunker Hill.

The Red Devils, ranked third in the latest state rankings in 2A, scored a pair of goals early and held off a late charge by the Bears to come away with a 2-0 conference victory.

The shutout for Newton-Conover (11-1, 5-0) is its eighth this season.

Giving up the third-most rushing yards in franchise history, the Carolina Panthers were methodically picked apart by the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 37-19 loss on Sunday night in Charlotte.

Fumbles hurt Maiden in 28-7 loss to Spartans

Maiden hadn’t made many mistakes in its first three football games this season.

Game No. 4 Friday against South Caldwell was a different story.

Five fumbles hindered the Blue Devils, who dropped a 28-7 home non-conference game to the Spartans.

Cougars come back in second half to beat Indians

With a 24-6 lead at halftime, the St. Stephens football team appeared heading for its second win of the season.

Alexander Central had other plans.

The Cougars outgained the Indians, 277-64, in the second half on their way to a 27-24 win in Hickory.

Indians drop second JV football game of the week

For the second time in less than a week, the St. Stephens junior varsity football team tasted defeat.

After falling to Maiden 27-12 on Monday, the Indians another tough road game against Alexander Central on Thursday, 45-6.

Saenger’s hat trick propels Tigers past Indians, 5-0

Will Saenger scored three goals — all in the second half — leading Fred T. Foard to a 5-0 victory against rival St. Stephens on the soccer field Wednesday.

The Tigers improve their record to 7-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in Northwestern 3A/4A games this season.
