Hickory's Peterson claims two state championships

February 12, 2015

Hickory’s Emmaline Peterson experienced success early in her high school swimming career, winning a state title last year as a freshman.

The Red Tornadoes sophomore repeated her performance Thursday during the 3A state championship meet in Raleigh, winning the 500-yard freestyle event again while adding a state title in the 200-yard freestyle.

LR baseball program is off to best start since 1996

Entering this season, the Lenoir-Rhyne baseball program had an overall losing record in its 84-year history — 1,175 wins, 1,179 losses and seven ties.

This year’s group of Bears, though, hope to build a winning baseball legacy that the will carry on for years to come.

Newton native Hoots is at home with Tar Heels

Eric Hoots bleeds Carolina blue.

The son of a University of North Carolina grad and Newton pastor, Hoots grew up cheering for his beloved Tar Heels on the basketball court.

“My dad kind of fueled my love for Carolina and also my love for basketball,” Hoots said. “That’s where it came from.”

North Carolina coaching great Dean Smith dies at 83

Dean Smith was more than simply a basketball coach.

Yes, the retired Hall of Famer left North Carolina as the winningest coach in men's history after capturing two national titles along with the 1976 Olympic gold medal and coaching some of the sport's biggest names, Michael Jordan among them.

BREAKING: Foard wins 3A dual team state title

February 7, 2015

Battling for the third-straight year, it took all 14 matches to decide the 3A dual team champion on Saturday at Copas Gymnasium.

Fred T. Foard's Alex Leatherman earned a 10-8 decision victory against Morehead's Gideon Biggs to help the Tigers win their second 3A dual team state trophy in the past three seasons, 30-23.

Tigers take on Panthers in final for third-straight year

For the third-straight year, Fred T. Foard and Morehead will lock up on Saturday to determine the 3A dual team state wrestling champion.

The Tigers (39-1) host the Panthers (30-2) on the mat at Copas Gymnasium at 2 p.m. to determine the best 3A dual team in the state of North Carolina.
