Defense leads Catawba County in home-opening win

The Catawba County Hornets’ home opener was delayed a week because of the heavy rain in the area last week.
Two weeks was worth the wait.

The Hornets defense forced four turnovers in a 32-12 victory against the Carolina Hawks at Westside/Jaycee Park.

Hornets cornerback Brian “Turner Island” Turner intercepted two Hawks passes in the first quarter and returned them both for touchdowns.

Newton-Conover hosting 'Red and White' game

Newton-Conover High School will be hosting its Red and White intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 6 p.m.

The scrimmage will be the final game for the Red Devils before they open their season on Aug. 23 at home against Chase.

Newton-Conover ‘Big Red’ passes are on sale now

Newton-Conover High School is currently selling “Big Red” sports passes for the upcoming prep sports seasons.

These passes will admit you to any regular season home athletic event during the 2013-14 school year.

Individual passes are $100. Family passes can be also be purchased for $300 and admits four persons.

These passes can be purchased at Newton-Conover High School.

Asst. coach Enck brings Northern flair to Blue Devils

From the “Big Apple” to the “Biggest Little Football Town in the World” — Jeffrey Enck is bringing a New York state of mind to the Maiden football team.

The Long Island, N.Y. native will coach the Blue Devils’ wide receiving corps for the first time this fall season.

Ryan Gettys taking over two Tigers tennis programs

Ryan Gettys is returning to coaching at Fred T. Foard High School.

The former Tigers head football coach is taking over the boys and girls tennis programs at Foard.

Gettys had been at Bunker Hill High School as an assistant football coach this past two schools years and also taught personal finance, planning and marketing at the school.

Harvey fans eight in his third outing for GCL Orioles

Former Bandys standout pitcher Hunter Harvey had the best start so far of his professional baseball career on Thursday.

The Gulf Coast League (GCL) Orioles pitcher allowed no runs, no hits, one walk and struck out eight batters in three innings against the GCL Red Sox.

Harvey’s eight punch outs were part of 15 total team strikeouts.

Former head coaches Phelps, Miller join BH staff

The Bunker Hill football team started practice on Thursday with two new members to its coaching staff.

Jason Phelps, who was the head coach at Fred T. Foard High School last season, joins the Bears as their defensive coordinator.

Phelps will also teach strength and conditioning at Bunker Hill High.

73 suit up for first Newton-Conover football practice

The Newton-Conover football team opened up its first official practice on Thursday with high hopes.

The Wayne Hicks era was officially ushered in at St. Stephens on Thursday with his first practice as head coach.

Hicks was pleased with how his team came out and performed on the practice field.

“It was very upbeat today,” he said. “I’m very pleased with the progress and the attitudes in particular. On the field, we have a lot of work to do.”

Prep football teams open practice starting today

Today is the first official day designated by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) for fall sports practices and tryouts.

Bandys and Maiden high schools are the first of the teams to officially kick off their 2013 campaign.

Both squads are the only two schools with practices in the morning at 9 a.m.
