BREAKING: Tharpe resigns as Red Devils head coach

After 11 seasons on the sidelines at Newton-Conover High School, Jonathan Tharpe decided to hang up his whistle.

Tharpe submitted his letter of resignation on Friday after four seasons of leading the Red Devil boys basketball program.

Former Foard standout paves a new path in Rugby

Growing up as a child, Cole Schanilec always wanted to carry the football.
With his larger frame, he never had the opportunity.

“That always bothered me,” Schanilec said. “Rugby has given me the chance to do it all — score, tackle and kick.”

The Maiden and golf communities lost a dear friend last week.

Claybourne Brooks “C.B.” Jones, Jr. died this past Thursday at the age of 62 after a longtime battle with colon cancer.

A longtime golf pro at Glen Oaks Golf Club, Jones was laid to rest on Monday at Maiden City Cemetery.

Dale Jarrett, Gary Yount join N-CHS Hall of Fame

Newton-Conover High School inducted its sixth-ever athletic hall of fame class on Monday night.

Former Red Devils Dale Jarrett and Gary Yount joined the long list of hall of famers during the school’s winter sports banquet held at Lemon Gymnasium.

Trojans can’t come back, fall in West finals to Eagles

Bandys had made a habit of overcoming double-digit deficits during its run in the 2A girls basketball playoffs.

Saturday’s deficit, though, was one it just couldn’t overcome.

The Trojans fell behind by 12 points early and couldn’t click on offense against Wilkes Central, falling 49-40 to the Eagles in the 2A West finals at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex.
