3 county tennis squads in dual team playoffs

Three prep tennis teams from across Catawba County are in the 2A and 3A dual team playoffs.

Newton-Conover and Bandys qualified from the CVAC, while Hickory made the 3A playoffs.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the pairings officially on Monday.

Weather has forced several changes in the prep sports schedule around Catawba County today. Below are all postponements:

Bunker Hill at Bandys, ppd., 7 p.m. Tuesday
Maiden at Draughn, ppd., 7 p.m. Tuesday
W. Caldwell at Newton-Conover, ppd., 7 p.m. Tuesday

Prep softball

Panthers cap last day of NFL Draft with value picks

April 28, 2013

The Carolina Panthers sought after the best overall value players in the third and final day of the 2013 NFL Draft on Saturday.

The team drafted Valdosta State guard Edmund Kugbila in the fourth round, selected Iowa State linebacker A.J. Klein in the fifth round and chose Oregon running back Kenjon Barner in the sixth round.

Patrick Henley ready for Junior Olympic appearance

John Henley knew his son was destined to be a gymnast after seeing his 7-year-old son Patrick backflip off of the family’s porch.

“He just decided he was going to flip and did it,” John said. “That’s when we said ‘oh my gosh.’” He decided he wanted to do gymnastics, and we started taking him.”

Panthers draft another DT with second-round pick

The Carolina Panthers further solidified their defensive line on Friday night with the selection of Purdue defensive tackle Kawann Short.

The second-round pick for Carolina was its only of the second day of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman regarded Short as the best pass rushing defensive tackle in this year's draft.

Cooper, Crouse lead Lady Blue Devils to 17th win

The Maiden softball team picked up its 11th consecutive win of the season behind 14 runs on 13 hits Thursday in Claremont.

Jessica Cooper and Emily Crouse each drove in three RBIs, helping the Lady Blue Devils pick up a 14-3 five-inning road victory against Bunker Hill.

Panthers select DT Lotulelei with 14th overall pick

Searching for the heart of their defensive line, the Carolina Panthers turned to a Star to fill the void.

The team selected Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei with the 14th overall pick during Thursday night’s NFL Draft.

England takes over as Lady Bucs basketball coach

Tisha England is trading one spot on the bench at Catawba Valley Community College for another.
