Red Devils outlast obstacles, Wolves in 3-1 victory

Jessica Hayes picked an interesting game to return to the soccer field for Newton-Conover.

In a contest that included a coach being dismissed from the field, four goals and an injury, the Lady Red Devils prevailed past Lincolnton 3-1 at Gurley Stadium.

It was the first game back for Hayes since injuring her toe during last year’s 2A West Region final against West Stokes.

Norton bounces back from head injury to lead CVCC

Brandyn Norton doesn’t remember much about June 22, 2013.

“The last thing I remember was throwing a pitch,” he said. “Then, I heard a noise.”

Pitching with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning in an American Legion baseball game between Asheville Post 70 and Hickory Post 48, Norton was struck in the head by a line drive.

Fred T. Foard's Schmidt receives top scholarship

A Fred T. Foard athlete has received a prestigious honor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Senior Jacob Schmidt is a recipient of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, which is given to a high school senior demonstrating exceptional impact and academic achievement.

Only about three percent of those who apply for the scholarship receive it.

Hoos, Spartans advance to Round of 32 in Charlotte

Virginia and Michigan State both advanced to the Round of 32 of the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament with victories in Charlotte on Friday.

The No. 8 Spartans (24-11) held off a late charge from ninth-seeded Georgia to come away with the 70-63 win in the day's opening game.

Maiden High School sent shockwaves through the high school basketball scene on Thursday with the hiring of Danny Anderson

On the same day former boys basketball coach Pat Kahny resigned, the Blue Devils hired Anderson, a longtime head coach at West Caldwell, to assume the vacated position.

Maiden High School released a statement regarding Anderson’s hire on Thursday.
