Sets of siblings setting the soccer standard at Maiden

Two sets of siblings are helping to set a new standard with the Maiden boys soccer program.

The Lichtenwalners — Michael and Patrick — and the Medina-Garcias — Christian and Alonso — are leading the Blue Devils on the pitch this fall, hoping to take the squad to new heights.

Red Devils ranked 10th in first AP poll of the season

After two shutouts to start the season, the Newton-Conover football program was rewarded for its play on Tuesday.

The Red Devils are ranked 10th in the first Associated Press poll of the season, which was released on Tuesday afternoon.

The poll is voted on by a statewide panel of prep sports writers.

Austin Johnson makes most of second chance in NFL

An undrafted rookie in 2012, Austin Johnson was ready to start his NFL career in Baltimore.

After nearly signing with the Ravens, the team discovered a torn labrum in his left shoulder — putting his future in football in jeopardy.

Two years later, Johnson is healthier than ever and is now the starting fullback for the New Orleans Saints.

BREAKING: Succop signs with Tennessee Titans

It didn't take long for Ryan Succop to land on his feet.

The former Kansas City Chiefs and Hickory High placekicker signed a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans on Monday night.

The news comes two days after Succop — a five-year NFL veteran — was released from Kansas City in place of undrafted rookie free agent Cairo Santos.

Succop took to Twitter about his recent signing.

Wolfpack's Bobby Lutz is a finalist for Cougar's job

Catawba native Bobby Lutz is a finalist for the head men's basketball coaching job at College of Charleston, according to multiple sources.

Lutz, a former UNC Charlotte head basketball coach and current N.C. State associate head basketball coach, interviewed for the Cougar's coaching vacancy on Saturday.

Starkey leaving Lady Bears, Pate to succeed him

Todd Starkey is leaving the Lenoir-Rhyne women’s basketball program to take an assistant coaching position at Indiana University, as first reported by The Observer News Enterprise on Saturday.

Starkey accepted a position Thursday on the staff of first-year Indiana head coach Teri Moren, who was hired by the Hoosiers on Aug.9.

The Chiefs cut the veteran NFL kicker and former Hickory High standout on Saturday as part of reducing the team's roster to the NFL mandatory 53 players.

Panthers make final roster cuts, get roster to 53

The Carolina Panthers reduced their roster to the NFL mandatory 53 players by 4 p.m. on Saturday.

A total of 21 players were either waived or released on Saturday by the Panthers. Among the notable releases were safety Robert Lester, guard Chris Scott and wide receiver Tavarres King.
