Red Devils wrap up SD-7 title on ‘Senior Night’

For the seventh time in the past eight years, the Newton-Conover wrestling team won a conference championship.

The Red Devils wrapped up the outright 2015 SD-7 title on Tuesday with a 57-12 win against visiting Maiden at Lemon Gym.

A pair of athletic events in Catawba County have been postponed Tuesday.

The Fred T. Foard at Watauga wrestling match, as well as the Watauga at Fred T. Foard basketball games have been postponed. They will be made up on Wednesday.

BREAKING: Wittenberg named Hickory football coach

The Hickory Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday night to hire Allen Robinson Wittenberg as the head football coach at Hickory High School.

Wittenberg, 41, a native of Hickory and a graduate of Hickory High, will start his new role at HHS before the end of February 2015.

Knowing it would be the final game for teammate Josh Ramseur, Alex Johnson put in the extra work in practice this week in preparation for West Caldwell.

Johnson’s work ethic showed on Friday, and the junior scored 26 points in a 85-77 victory for Newton-Conover against the Warriors at Lemon Gym.

The St. Stephens sophomore is making a big splash in his first-ever prep swimming season, helping fill in some important gaps for the Indians this winter.
