Q&A with Jay: ESPN’s Bilas visits Rock Barn

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Hickory Sportsman’s Club on Thursday, ESPN’s Jay Bilas visited Rock Barn Golf & Spa.

Bilas, who played basketball at Duke University and is now an college hoops analyst, spoke during the club’s bi-annual meeting.

Before the meeting, O-N-E Sports Editor Cody Dalton was able to interview Bilas on a number of topics.

3A West Region championship
Fred T. Foard (21-5-2) at Weddington (22-1-1), 6 p.m.

The Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard boys soccer teams are both a game away from playing for a state title.

The Red Devils edged Forbush, and the Tigers slid past Statesville — both by 2-1 scores — to advance to the 2A West Region and 3A West Region championship games.

No. 16 Smoky Mountain (2-9) at No. 1 East Lincoln (11-0)
No. 9 Rutherfordton Spindale (7-4) at No. 8 Bandys (8-3)

Trojans rush for 292 yards in win against Red Devils

Pounding the football on the ground and converting key fourth downs, the Bandys football team picked up a critical 31-14 rivalry victory against Newton-Conover on Friday night at Gurley Stadium.

The win by Bandys (8-3, 5-2) assures it of a third-place finish in the conference and likely home game in the playoffs, which start next Friday night.

Williams, Tigers topple Indians for sixth victory

November 8, 2014

Matt Williams threw three touchdowns passes and ran for another score, lifting Fred T. Foard to a 41-19 victory against rival St. Stephens on Friday.

Foard improves to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play, clinching its first winning season and playoff berth since 2008.

No, this isn’t the script for a dramatic sports movie, but rather the story of Bandys quarterback Devan Cox and Newton-Conover head football coach Matt Beam.
