Last season, the Crawdads finished 75-64, which was second best in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League.

Hickory also clinched the first-half division.

“This is probably the largest turnout we have had at the Hot Stove,” Seaman said. “We appreciate everyone coming out and kicking off the 19th season of Crawdads baseball.”

Jeremy Null, a 6-foot-7-inch 215-pound pitcher for the Bears, will graduate this spring. However, he will also be looking forward to the month because of the Major League Baseball Draft.

"I am just anxious," Null said. "I want to graduate, but I love high school too. High school has been a blast. It will be a bunch of mixed emotions. I am ready to see what the draft is going to be like."

In a match up of top five teams in the state in 2A, Newton-Conover used an early lead to hold off Bandys for the crucial Catawba Valley Athletic Conference victory.

"It is good to wrestle somebody one times," said Newton-Conover coach Eddy Clark. "We will see them again at the conference tournament and it really would not surprise me if we see them down the road in the postseason."

Trojan Queen: Win gives coach 300 combined victories at Bandys High School

January 22, 2011

The clock read 0:00. History was made.

After a win against Draughn on Friday, Bandys coach Beth Queen collected her 300th win in 15 seasons as a player and coach.

“I love the Bandys community,” Queen said. “I’ve grown up here and been a part of Bandys basketball my whole life. It brings me to be able to bring more victories to the school. I wouldn’t want to coach anywhere else.”

The Trojans came out in the first half motivated to give their coach the historic win. They displayed a strong offensive and defensive performance, and limited Draughn to just four first-quarter points.

Red Devils shake off slow start to win

January 22, 2011

The Lady Red Devils got off to a slow start Friday against rival Maiden, despite an earlier-season win against the Blue Devils by as many as 30 points.

By first quarter’s end, the Lady Red Devils put any doubt away and crushed rival Maiden in its win Friday.

Newton-Conover (14-1, 7-0) took a 6-4 lead early and then within the last four minutes of the first quarter outscored Maiden (7-11, 2-6) by a 11-7 margin.

Quazzy Tipps and Shynese Whitener added most of the Red Devils’ points early and combined for 14 of their 17 first-quarter points.

Wrestling rivals: Crucial CVAC match between N-C, Bandys takes center stage next week

January 20, 2011

Red and Green.

I’m not talking about Christmas colors, but rather those of Newton-Conover and Bandys high schools. One of these teams will receive a gift next week, as they square off in a classic confrontation in the Catawba Valley 2A.

The rivalry started when Eddy Clark decided to take the wrestling head coaching position at Newton-Conover.

“I took over this program in 1999,” Clark said. “That next year, we got good and won the conference. We beat Bandys. That set the stage, and it has been a heated rivalry.”

Well Draughn Plan: Whitener, Tipps combine for 33 points in win

January 19, 2011

The Red Devil defense suffocated the Wildcat offense Wednesday.
Newton-Conover (13-1, 7-0) forced 15 Draughn turnovers in the first half and got 13 points each from Quazzy Tipps and Shynese Whitener in the first and second halves, respectively, to pull away for the Catawba 2A victory.

The opening moments of the game were close, and the biggest lead for either team was three points.

With the score 13-10 in favor Newton-Conover, the Red Devils started to utilize their deep bench. N-C head coach Jonathan Tharpe said the change was due in part to the long week ahead.

Wildcats avoid upset with OT win

Despite carrying a four-point lead into halftime, the Wildcats got the better of the Red Devils.

Cody Brown scored 19 points, and Adam Manns added 13 points in Draughn's thrilling overtime win.

Newton-Conover (6-8, 3-4) took the lead into halftime after Nick Carter hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Carter led the Red Devils with 12 first half points.

Draughn (14-3, 5-2) clawed back to take a six-point lead with a strong third quarter. The Red Devils came back in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Story's double-double leads Trojans to win

January 19, 2011

Even the long break couldn’t slow down the Lady Trojans.

Bandys got 19 points, 13 steals and 6 assists from freshman Madi Story on their way to a Catawba 2A win over Bunker Hill on Tuesday.

The game was the first for Bandys since their Jan. 7 game against Maiden.
Coach Beth Queen was aware of the time off.

“I was really concerned,” Queen said. “Any time you take nine to 10 days and haven’t played, that is in the back of your mind. This game was like the last game at Maiden, where the game time is moved up and everything is out of routine.”
