Richards continues camp for over 20 years

The first stop on Cody’s Camp Tour 2011 is the Newton-Conover volleyball camp.

The camp, which is operated by the coaching staff of the Newton-Conover volleyball program, focuses on fourth through ninth graders.
More than 20 girls participated in the two-week camp and its eight sessions.

Newton-Conover volleyball coach Linda Richards, who owns more than 700 victories in her coaching career at Fred T. Foard and Newton-Conover, has operated the camp for more than 20 years.

Richards said she focuses primary on one aspect with each of the campers.

Barrymore’s match win crucial in N-C victory

Tyler Barrymore hasn’t played in a 2A state championship match. After Thursday, that all changed.

His play was critical in the Red Devils’ 7-2 victory over Shelby, which earned the team a fifth straight berth in state championship match.

Barrymore picked the perfect time to have the match of his young career at Newton-Conover.

The freshman rallied for one set down against Will Lutz to win the match on a third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4 (10-6).

Harris homers Bandys into second round

Bandys and Wilkes Central shared two things on Wednesday — team colors and a softball field.

The Lady Trojans, however, owned the lead.

Scarlett Harris hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, and the Lady Trojans (20-5) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, to advance to the second round playoffs.

Harris’ two-run shot came from the third position in the line-up, which is a significant difference from her typical fifth spot in the batting order.

Hallberg speaks on GHC title defense

Tuesday was Media Day for the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors.

In attendance was last year’s tournament champion, Gary Hallberg, who spoke to those in attendance.

“It is very humbling to be here,” Hallberg said. “It is so significant when I sit here. I don’t win a lot of tournaments. This is all new to me.”

Hallberg overcame a five-stroke lead and shot an 11-under-par 61 to capture last year’s GHC title.

His final-round of 61 is record for a lowest final-round score in Champions Tour history.

Choi, Lampe win 2A doubles titles

Back-to-back state championships.

Hang Lak Choi and Ryan Lampe closed out a second straight doubles title on Saturday, defeating Shelby’s Ray Webb Parker and Ben Cheaney 6-3, 7-5.
The title is the second straight for Choi, who won last year with Will Huggins last season.

Lampe was also in last year’s final, but fell with partner Dillon Cervantez to the team of Choi-Huggins.

Barr Ks 12, Bears’ season ended by Rams

After trying to survive over an hour rain delay and 12 strikeouts, the Bunker Hill baseball team’s season is over.

The Bears lost to Starmount at home on Friday. The Bears finished with a 26-2 record.

Impressive in victory was Starmount pitcher Alex Barr, who struck out 12 batters and allowed four hits in six innings pitched.

The Rams (17-8) went up 2-0 in the top of the second inning. After third basemen Tanner Mathis reached base on a two-out single, catcher Jake Barr hit a two-run homer off of Bears’ pitcher Jeremy Null.

Bucs start NJCAA tournament play today

For the second time in school history, the CVCC baseball team embarks on a quest to win the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X tournament.

The Bucs (35-13) face Patrick Henry Community College today at 1 p.m. at O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City.

The winner of that game will take on the winner of Pasco-Hernando and Surry Community College on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Last year, the Bucs entered the tournament, which was played at Hooker Field in Martinsville, Va., as the No. 6 seed.

Indians win home playoff game on road

May 11, 2011

Rain forced the St. Stephens’ soccer team to move its home game on the road Wednesday to Lenoir-Rhyne University.

The Lady Indians (16-3-3) responded by flooding their opponent, RS Central, with defense and drowning them in goals.

Macy Franklin scored three goals, including two in the second half, and Sabrina Summers had three assists, as St. Stephens rolled to a first round victory.

Adams leads Red Devils with key wins

Hearing some chatter from Salisbury before their match, the Newton-Conover tennis used it as motivation, went out on the court and took care of business.

Senior Austin Adams earned key victories in singles and doubles, as the Red Devils defeated the Hornets to advance to the third round of the playoffs next Tuesday.

Bunker Hill erases 4-0 hole, wins CVAC title

Down 4-0, the Bunker Hill baseball never gave up.

The Bears relied on their veteran leadership to score 10 runs over the next six innings on their way to a second straight CVAC baseball tournament championship.
