Hickory takes top honors at county match

The Hickory men’s golf team won the Catawba County golf tournament for the 11th time in 12 attempts Thursday.

Leading the Red Tornadoes was the sensational play of senior J.T. Poston, who shot a 4-under-par-68 to win the tournament. That performance comes three days after he shot a 1-under-par-71 Monday in a Northwestern Conference match.

Maiden survives N-C rally to earn victory

Maiden survived a furious rally from Newton-Conover to win a hard-fought Catawba Valley Athletic Conference softball contest Wednesday. 

The Blue Devils' win came despite a monster six RBI game from N-C shortstop Breanna Jones. She was 3-for-4 on the day, including a double.

Maiden got off to a great start in the game by scoring six runs in the first two innings. Christian Childers drove in Lauren Sizemore on a single for the first run of the game.

Lindsay Schronce scored on an error on N-C third basemen Sarah Van Horn to make it 2-0 after the first inning.

Globetrotter 'Buckets' Blakes talks hoops, community

In leau of the Harlem Globetrotter’s performance in Hickory on Sunday, Anthony “Buckets” Blakes discusses a variety of topics, including his early memories of watching the Globetrotters, his favorite players and his experiences with the team.

Below is what he had to say in a one-on-one interview.

Q: Growing up as a kid, were the Globetrotters something you ever got a chance to see or watch?

Three inducted into N-C Hall of Fame

Three former Newton-Conover graduates were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame during the winter sports athletic banquet Monday.

Among those inducted were John Tate, Christi Crawford and Tim Elrod.
Tate spent more than 50 years giving various contributions to Red Devil athletics, including coaching officiating and playing.

Tate also worked at the Newton News Enterprise from 1951-1954.
Cranford was inducted for her athletic performance at the school. She finished as all-conference softball and basketball three times (1985-87) and tennis once (1986).

Lowe resigns after 5 years at N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. — Sidney Lowe has resigned after five seasons as North Carolina State men's basketball coach, according to a person familiar with the situation

The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the school has yet to announce Lowe's resignation.

Lowe had an 86-78 overall record, but just 25-55 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. He inherited a program coming off five straight NCAA tournament trips, but he never finished higher than ninth in the ACC despite twice being picked to finish in the top third of the 12-team league.

Red Devils come back after trailing early

Newton-Conover fought back from an early deficit against Hickory on Monday to win a hard fought non-conference match.

The Red Devils (7-1, 4-0) trailed early in the match after the Red Tornadoes picked up two early victories as Hunter Coffey defeated Hunter Nestor 6-0, 6-1 and Valentin Waltenberger defeated Tyler Barrymore 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. 

Newton-Conover rallied with four consecutive singles wins. Senior Hang “Bubba” Choi picked up a quick opening set victory over Alex Arditti and held on in the second set to win 6-1, 7-5.

Red Devils fall short of a comeback

Trailing early in the game, Newton-Conover made a comeback, but fell short in its game against North Gaston on Friday.

The Red Devils (0-3) fell in an early 3-0 hole in the top of the first inning. North Gaston scored three runs, including an RBI double from pitcher Henry Rundio and a fielder's choice by Micah Smith.

Newton-Conover's Parker Sigmon notched the first run of the game for his team in the bottom of the third, when he plated Jake Cansler to cut the deficit down to 3-1.

State runner-up Lilly looks to repeat success

As high school conference golf season gets ready to kick off next week, one golfer has his sights set on the 2A State Tournament.

Thomas Lilly, who finished as a runner-up in the tournament last season as a freshman, will try to better that performance this season.

Last year’s finish was the culmination so far of Lilly’s 12-year competitive golfing career.

Lampe, Choi try to lead Red Devils back to a state championship

The Newton-Conover boys’ tennis team is looking to repeat their 2010 season and give the program another state title.

The Red Devils finished with a 26-0 record last season, including a 14-0 mark in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference.

Leading the charge this season will be the doubles team of Hang Lak Choi and Ryan Lampe. The two tennis players were on separate teams in the state championship doubles match.

Choi played with senior Will Huggins, while Lampe played with senior Dillon Cervantez. Choi and Huggins defeated Lampe and Cervantez, 6-3, 6-2, to claim the championship.

Maiden loses despite strong pitching

Despite a solid pitching performance from Hannah Callahan on Tuesday, the Lady Blue Devils were defeated by West Lincoln at home.

Callahan pitched a complete game and allowed four hits, one walk and struck out nine West Lincoln batters.

The Rebels (1-2) got the scoring in the game going in the top of the fourth inning, as Baily Fishel singled, advanced to third base on a throwing error and scored on a single by Emily Workman.

Maiden (1-2) tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth, as Mollie Sigmon scored on a single by Lauren Sizemore. That made it 1-1 after five innings.
