McElwee becomes seventh Crawdad to join Pelicans

For the seventh time this season, a member of the Hickory Crawdads baseball team has been called up.

Right-handed relief pitcher Josh McElwee was called up to High-A Myrtle Beach on Friday, joining fellow Crawdads Cody Kendall, Kevin Pucetas, Lewis Brinson, Nick Vickerson, Abel De Los Santos, and Kevin Torres as a member of the Pelicans.

Lance Stephenson officially introduced by Hornets

Lance Stephenson hopes to be the final piece in the Charlotte Hornets’ quest for an NBA championship.

The 6-foot-5 guard was introduced as the newest member of the team during a press conference Friday at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Hornets aim for championship repeat in 35th season

In the team’s 35th season, the Catawba County Hornets aim to do something no other team in the Central Carolinas Football League has ever done — repeat.

The Hornets are coming off a championship season in the CCFL.

The team’s returning players were presented with their title rings on Thursday during practice.

Hornets dominate Pelicans, 104-75, to advance

After starting off the NBA Summer League with three losses in three games, the Charlotte Hornets are on a roll.

The Hornets defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, 104-75, in the second round of the Summer League tournament on Thursday.

The victory by Charlotte follows up a 82-81 first-round victory against the Dallas Mavericks behind Roberto Nelson's 3-point buzzer beater.

Crawdads shut out on diamond by BlueClaws, 7-0

The Hickory Crawdads fell 7-0 at home against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Tuesday.

The Crawdads and BlueClaws play against Wednesday at noon at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Area coaches train, trying to improve player safety

Sixteen football coaches in the Catawba County School System gathered at Maiden High School on Monday, all in an effort to help aid player safety.

Former Concord High School coach EZ Smith taught the eight-hour seminar, which was sponsored by USA Football’s Heads Up initiative.

Hornets add depth at guard, sign Brian Roberts

Brian Roberts started his NBA career in 2012 as a New Orleans Hornet.

The 6-foot-1 guard agreed to a two-year, $5.5 million deal on Sunday to continue playing in the NBA — this time as a member of the Charlotte Hornets.

Undrafted after coming out of the University of Dayton in 2008, Roberts spent the 2008-09 season playing basketball for club Galil Gilboa in Israel.

Hornets sign former Tar Heel forward Marvin Williams

After coming up short in the chase for Utah guard Gordon Hayward, the Charlotte Hornets have settled on another Jazz product.

Forward Marvin Williams has signed a two-year, $14 million deal with the Hornets, according to sources. All of Williams’ contract is guaranteed with no options — team or player.

LAS VEGAS — Facing the defending Summer League champions was no easy task for the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

The Golden State Warriors took a 11-0 advantage early in the contest and led wire-to-wire in a 70-58 victory against the Hornets at the Thomas and Mack Center.
