Still seeking 1st major, Garcia lurking at Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Sergio Garcia was supposed to shed that "best player never to win a major" label years ago.

Yet here he is, 32 and still searching.

The Spaniard climbed into contention at the Masters on Friday with a 4-under 68 that left him a stroke behind the ageless Fred Couples and Jason Dufner. It's only his sixth round in the 60s in 14 trips to Augusta National, and third since 2009.

Lady Bears move back into top 25 poll

The Lenoir-Rhyne softball team moved back into the national rankings this week. The Lady Bears are ranked No. 23 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA Div. II top 25 Poll.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 37-10 on the season, and has won 15 of its last 16 games including eight straight contests.

Crawdads opener postponed due to weather

The kickoff to the 20th season of Hickory Crawdads baseball was delayed on Thursday due to weather.

The 'Dads were scheduled to play at Kannapolis, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday with back-to-back seven-inning games starting at 6:05 p.m.

Red Devils, Bears finish among the top five

PREP NOTEBOOK: Tigers bounce back on diamond

Fred T. Foard bounced back from a defeat Tuesday to Alexander Central, knocking off South Caldwell 4-0.

Lexi Shubert drove in two RBIs on two singles. She also pitched seven innings, striking out 10 and walking four.

Mackenzie Dziendiel also drove in a run in the Foard (13-2) victory.

Smith, Teague leads Hawks past Charlotte

ATLANTA — Josh Smith scored 24 points, Jeff Teague added 17 and the Atlanta Hawks beat the woeful Charlotte Bobcats 120-93 on Wednesday night.

Joe Johnson finished with 16 points for Atlanta, which had lost three of four. Hawks coach Larry Drew rested all of his starters in the fourth quarter.

Hickory Crawdads prepare to kick off 20th season

Alexander Central coaching hire looms

Alexander Central High School expects to have a new head football coach after a board of education meeting Wednesday.

Alexander Central High School Principal Doug Rhoney told The O-N-E on Monday that the three finalists for the position include Newton-Conover High School head football coach Nick Bazzle.
