Indians sweep Catawba County swim championships

January 4, 2012

After watching rival Hickory sweep the first-ever all-county swim meet last year, St. Stephens made the best of its second chance.

The Indians, who were girls runners-up and third in boys competition last year, took both titles at the second Catawba County swimming championships Tuesday at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.
The performance came as a surprise to their coach.

“We didn’t think we had won the girls, and we didn’t think we had a shot with the boys title at all,” said Indians coach LeeAnn Privett. “They just swam really well. We weren’t expecting this.”

Bulk of Panthers roster under contract through '12

January 3, 2012

CHARLOTTE — Panthers general manager Marty Hurney's offseason workload should be significantly less stressful than a year ago when it comes to re-signing free agents.

With 57 players either under contract or set to be tendered — including 20 of 22 projected starters — the Panthers are in pretty good shape personnel-wise as they look toward a promising future behind quarterback Cam Newton.

They don't have nearly as many unanswered questions as a year ago.

Lady Trojans, Wolves repeat at Holiday Clash

December 30, 2011

Third time’s the charm — at least in the case of the ninth annual Peoples Bank Holiday Clash.

Bandys scored 29 points in the first quarter, and maintained at least a 10-point lead against North Lincoln for most of the game on its way to a third-straight girls title at the Clash.

“When I think about our tournament overall, I think it’s a team effort,” said Lady Trojans coach Beth Queen. “When you look at our box score, we’ve been very balanced as far as points, steals and assists. It’s been a very balanced attack. That’s what has made me very happy about this tournament.”

Tempers flared and aggression boiled over in a physical rubber match between Newton-Conover and Hickory for the Catawba Valley Classic girls title on Thursday.

When the dust settled, the Red Tornadoes hoisted their record 16th Classic banner, ending the Red Devils’ chance at a repeat.

The game’s final score mirrored that of a contest between the two school’s football programs.

Newton-Conover and Hickory combined to make 17-of-74 field goal attempts — a staggering 22 percent for the game.
