Bandys' Beatty 3-peats as CVAC's top swimmer

For the third-straight season, a Bandys girls swimmer is the best in the Catawba Valley 2A.

Senior Michaela Beatty, who placed in the top three of each of her individual events Saturday at the 2A regionals, won the 2012 CVAC girls swimmer of the year. She claimed the award in 2010 and 2011 as a sophomore and junior, respectively.

Beatty is the only girl from a Catawba County school represented on the CVAC’s all-conference teams.

Joining her as All-CVAC are Draughn’s Haley Brinkley, Emily Farris, Alexis Lynn, Elizabeth Phillips and Karoline Pittman.

Turner’s last-minute shot lifts Tigers past Indians

Chaos ensued at Corpas Gymnasium on Friday, as Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens collided in a contest befitting a rivalry.

Foard junior Jordan Turner saluted his fellow upperclassmen by making a lay-up with 15 seconds to go, lifting the Tigers to a nail-biting 45-43 victory Friday against St. Stephens on “Senior Night."

Turner scored 10 of his game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter, including the last-second bucket to give Foard (13-9, 3-8) the victory.

Winchester is Bandys first Div. 1 soccer signee

Bandys’ Cassidy Winchester made history on Friday.

The senior became the first girls soccer player at her school to sign with a Division I college, inking her National Letter of Intent with University of South Carolina-Upstate.

“I’m so excited,” Winchester said. “It’s an honor to be the first one to sign, just for my sake. I’m really happy just to be signing.”

Lady Trojans coach Clifford Mayer said the senior is unlike any player he’s ever had the privilege of coaching.

Struggling Bobcats relying on patience

CHARLOTTE — It’s hard to imagine things looking any bleaker for the Bobcats.

They’ve lost 10 straight games, have the NBA’s worst record and are coming off a 44-point drubbing Wednesday night at Portland, the worst loss in franchise history.

That’s why Charlotte director of basketball operations Rod Higgins said now, more than ever, the Bobcats need to exercise patience.

L-R grads preparing for Super Bowl XLVI

As the world prepares to watch the New York Giants and New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, two Lenoir-Rhyne graduates are working to claim titles.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell (‘85) and tight ends coach Michael Pope (‘64) both played for L-R on the gridiron.

Fewell, a Gastonia native, is in his second season with the Giants as their defensive coordinator.

He played for L-R from 1980-83, earning the team’s Most Improved award in his senior season.

CVAC, NWC wrestling titles on the line Saturday

Individual titles in 14 different weight classes are on the line Saturday at the Catawba Valley 2A and Northwestern 3A/4A wrestling tournaments.

The CVAC tournament takes place Saturday at 9 a.m. at East Burke High School, while the NWC tournament is at Alexander Central High School at 10 a.m.

Defending CVAC regular season and tournament champion Newton-Conover returns four champions from last year’s tournament, including Ian Canrobert (41-2), Coleman Carter (31-8), Addison Klutz (38-4) and Tyler Benfield (39-3).

The Newton Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for youth soccer, baseball, softball and girls volleyball. Sign-ups for soccer, baseball and softball continue through March 9. The deadline for volleyball is Feb. 17.

Pair of Blue Devils sign to play at next level

Finishing their high school careers where they started them together, Maiden quarterback Matt Johnson and running back Will Jenkins signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.

Johnson joins the first-ever recruiting class at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, while Jenkins signed to play for Fayetteville State University next season.

In 2011, Johnson ran for 1,789 yards, threw for another 1,077 yards and scored 30 offensive touchdowns (22 rushing TDs, eight passing).
On defense, he collected 41 tackles (31 solo) and intercepted one pass.

Fleming, McCorkle among five players signed

Five Catawba County football players made their college choices official during Wednesday’s National signing day.

Foard lineman Tanner Fleming, Bandys lineman Travis McCorkle and Hickory quarterback Kyle Johnson signed.

Fleming, who is 6-2, 280 pounds, decided to play for the Air Force in 2012. He had a solid senior season defensively for the Tigers, racking up 80 tackles, including 25 for a loss, and 12 sacks.

Fleming also blocked 12 kicks, including three in Foard’s season finale against Hickory, and forced two fumbles.
