Stewart wins NASCAR championship

November 21, 2011

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Tony Stewart insisted he wasn't a title contender when NASCAR's championship race began.

When it became clear he actually was a viable threat, he kicked it into another gear and vowed to go for broke in his pursuit of Carl Edwards.

Did he ever.

Panthers steal defeat from victory's jaws

November 21, 2011

DETROIT — Matthew Stafford shook off a couple of early interceptions, then went about leading the Detroit Lions to yet another memorable comeback.

The Lions quarterback matched a career-best with five touchdown passes, the final one a 7-yarder to Brandon Pettigrew with 2:32 left, and the Lions rallied for a 49-35 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

"We were killing ourselves with turnovers," he said. "We knew that we'd be able to score in the second half if we could just keep our hands on the ball."

Foard's Bliss looking to future, not past

November 17, 2011

Trying to get back to a winning track in boys basketball, Fred T. Foard is hoping new coach Rob Bliss will be the “straw that stirs the drink.”

Bliss, a former coach at Brevard, East Burke and West Henderson High Schools, comes to Foard with a 235-143 career coaching mark.

He guides a Foard hoops team that went 3-20 last year under former coach Mike Hainirhar, which includes an 0-12 Northwestern Conference record.
During the past two seasons, Foard is winless in 24 NWC games played.

Bliss said that becoming successful is about focusing on the future.

Brad Mangum era begins at Fred T. Foard

November 17, 2011

Stepping into the role of coach at a successful girls program at Fred T. Foard, Brad Mangum attempts to follow in the footsteps of his mentor.

Mangum takes over for Wendy Price, who coached 11 seasons, won 182 games and made the playoffs nine times.

The former South Caldwell assistant under Lady Spartans coach Jeff Parham for seven seasons realizes the program’s prestige at Foard, but wants to build it further.

N-C boys improving, girls seek repeat

November 17, 2011

When basketball season tips off next week, Newton-Conover High School enters brand new territory with two new head coaches.

Jonathan Tharpe, who coached the Lady Red Devils for three seasons, takes over the boys program from former coach Mark Carter.

“I think the biggest thing is we are continuing to build the program,” Tharpe said. “The same type of philosophies and things we did with the girls team I am trying to instill with the guys.”

The Red Devils were 13-11 overall and 9-5 in conference play last year, making it to the first round of the playoffs.

Panthers topped by Titans, 30-3

November 14, 2011

The Carolina Panthers of 2011 looked like the Panthers that struggled a year ago on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

Three points of offense are all the Panthers could muster against a tough and physical Titans defense. Tennessee also made Carolina pay on a few big plays early, allowing them to get ahead and dominate in a 30-3 victory in Charlotte.

"I didn't see a very good football game, truthfully, in every facet of the game" said Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

Many Panthers were frustrated with the end result.
