Hibbert leads Pacers to 99-77 win over Bobcats

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Roy Hibbert scored 20 points to help the Indiana Pacers beat the Charlotte Bobcats 99-77 on Saturday night.

Hibbert, who briefly left the game with a sprained right ankle, also had eight rebounds and three blocks. Tyler Hansbrough scored 15 points, Darren Collison had 14, and Danny Granger and George Hill each added 13 for the Pacers (6-2), who improved to 3-0 at home. Indiana was coming off an 87-74 win at Boston on Friday night.

Red Devils sweep Bears on the basketball court

Newton-Conover took an early lead and pulled away from Bunker Hill for a 66-50 CVAC win.

Kevin Halloway led the Red Devils (8-6, 3-1) with 14 points.
Taylor Simmons netted a team-high 14 points for the Bears (2-13, 2-3).

Newton-Conover 83, Bunker Hill 18

Kadesha Gibbs, Taylor Petty and Shynese Whitener combined for 56 points to lead the Lady Red Devils (11-3, 3-1) to the win against the Lady Bears.
Gibbs also notched her 1,000th career point in Friday’s game.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Maiden wins second CVAC game

Maiden improved to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play with a win over Bandys in boys basketball on Friday, 56-36.

Matt Johnson led all Blue Devil scorers with 15 points, while Jason Gantt pitched in 11 points.

Colton Medlin scored a game-high 17 points in the loss for Bandys (1-13, 0-5)

Fred T. Foard 68, Hibriten 54

The Tigers (11-4, 1-3) ended a 27-game conference losing streak by knocking off the Panthers on the road.

Jordan Turner scored 25 points, while Brice Falgout added 14 points in the victory for Foard.

Smith's lifts Hawks past Bobcats 102-96 in OT

CHARLOTTE — The Atlanta Hawks went to overtime for a second straight night, pulling out a 102-96 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday behind 23 points and 13 rebounds from Josh Smith.

The Hawks lost in triple-overtime to the Miami Heat the night before, but made sure there wouldn't be multiple extra periods needed by scoring the first seven points, with early 3-pointers by Jeff Teague and Joe Johnson.

Marvin Williams added 15 points and nine rebounds, and Al Horford scored 15 points for the Hawks (5-3).

Former N-C star Powell overcomes obstacles

Having trouble getting recruited, former Newton-Conover basketball player Adrian Powell found a way to play Div. I basketball.

When he finally got his chance and nearly lost the opportunity, the 2008 CVAC player of the year found a way to persevere.

Following graduation from Newton-Conover in 2008, Powell sought the Div. I basketball spotlight, enrolling at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va. for one year.

County teams square off on court Friday

Friday’s match-ups on the basketball court feature several in-county games.

The Bandys Lady Trojans (13-0, 4-0) try to keep their undefeated record when they host Maiden (5-6, 0-3).

Bandys (1-12, 0-4) seeks its first boys basketball win in the CVAC against the Blue Devils (4-6, 1-2).

Newton-Conover (10-3, 2-1) tries to keep pace in the CVAC girls basketball standings, facing Bunker Hill (0-13, 0-4).

The Bears (2-12, 2-2) and Red Devils (7-6, 2-1) also square off in boys hoops with the winner earning its third CVAC victory and moving up the ranks.

Crawdads announce 2012 Hot Stove Banquet

The Hickory Crawdads, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Texas Rangers, announced the details of the 2012 Hot Stove Banquet to be held on Monday, Jan. 30 at Rock Barn Golf & Spa. 

The evening will kick off with a social at 6:15 p.m. with the program and a delicious dinner starting at 7 p.m.

With their 20th anniversary season right around the corner, the Crawdads are digging into the past for the Hot Stove.  

Tigers earn impressive sweep of Cavs, Wolves

Just a week shy of its conference opener against rival St. Stephens, Fred T. Foard showed Wednesday it’s ready for the challenge.

The Tigers (18-1) lost only one of their 28 total matches against East Burke and Lincolnton, topping both squads in dominating fashion.

Coach Mike Carey said his team is preparing for its upcoming conference slate.

“We’re tuning up for St. Stephens next week,” he said. “That’s kind of our mindset right now. We’re getting ready for conference.”

PREP NOTEBOOK: Trojans top Bears, move to 13-0

The Bandys girls basketball team continued its early season roll, knocking off Bunker Hill in Catawba on Wednesday.

The Lady Trojans (13-0, 4-0) quickly jumped out to a 28-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, continuing their undefeated streak so far this season.

Three Bandys basketball players reached double-digits in scoring, including sophomore Madi Story, who led the team with 19 points.

Taylor Sigmon and Brittany Moss also scored 11 points each.

Margaret Connor scored 11 points, while Wilbelis Rojas added nine points for the Lady Bears (0-13, 0-4).
