Lady Trojans roll to their 17th win of the season

Nobody has been able to stop the Bandys girls basketball team this entire season.

After Friday, you can add Lincolnton to the list of unsuccessful challengers.

The Lady Trojans pulled ahead 35-7 after one quarter on their way to a 94-26 win against the Lady Wolves.

Bandys improves to 17-0 overall and 8-0 in conference games.

Red Devils top Blue Devils on wrestling mat

The Newton-Conover wrestling team didn’t slow down on Thursday against Maiden after nearly a week long layoff from being on the mat.

The Red Devils defeated the Blue Devils on the road, 62-6 — finishing the regular season unbeaten in Southern District 7 Athletic 2A matches.

Class act: Emotional Jarrett enters NASCAR Hall

Conover native. Newton-Conover High School graduate. And now, NASCAR Hall of Famer.

Dale Jarrett received one of auto racing’s most historic of honors Wednesday night during special ceremony in Charlotte.

Jarrett was one of five inductees into the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2014, joining Maurice Petty, Edward “Fireball” Roberts, Jack Ingram and Tim Flock.

Former Trojan Sigmon chosen to SoCon second team

Former Bandys High School and current Western Carolina Catamount softball player Taylor Sigmon has been named to the Southern Conference preseason second team, at first base, as voted on by the league coaches.

Sigmon, a sophomore from Catawba, was the only Catamount freshman from the 2013 season to play in all 56 games.

Saint, Foard seniors commemorate college signings

A pair of Catawba County athletes signed to play college athletics earlier this week.

St. Stephens volleyball standout Katelyn Houser will play at Catawba Valley Community College this fall.

Fred T. Foard baseball player Carson Bryant also signed with the Bucs.

BREAKING: Snow affects sports schedule again

For the second-straight day, snow has caused the prep sports schedule to change.

Seniors stand tall, Red Devils clinch SD-7 title

January 25, 2014

Six seniors have been the driving force for the Newton-Conover wrestling team this season.

On Friday night, they honored the program the only way they knew how — winning.

The Red Devils won 11 of their 13 matches against West Caldwell, clinching the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A championship with a 54-9 victory against the Warriors.
