Bunting named new Indians football chief

“Big Daddy” just got a little bigger.

St. Stephens High School named Chris Bunting, the defensive coordinator for the Indians football team last season, as its newest head coach Thursday.

Bunting replaces Fred Whalen, who stepped down after two seasons in the post.

“We have a great community here,” Bunting said at a Thursday press conference at the school. “We have a great support system with our principal and athletic director. We have an amazing faculty and our kids are fantastic. We have things in place that are very good for us.”

Every Buc scores in lopsided victory for CVCC

Each of the 11 players on the CVCC men’s basketball team scored at least one point Thursday against Patrick Henry, leading the Bucs to a 100-75 home win.

Justin Lail guided CVCC (6-9) with 19 points, while Will White and Anthony Hilliard scored 15 points each. Terrence Pol added a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

Six players fouled out in the game, including five for Patrick Henry (8-5). Due to their foul trouble, the Patriots played with three players in the remaining minute of the game.

L-R’s Arcieri on national watch list

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Stephan Arcieri has been named a “Player To Watch” in the Southeast region by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

The designation is part of the 2012 NCAA Div. II ABCA/Rawlings Preseason All-American Team.

Arcieri, a senior outfielder from Roswell, Ga., finished third on the team last season in hitting (.350) while starting 45 of the squad’s 47 games.

Arcieri also led the team in hits (62) to go along with 12 stolen bases, 35 runs scored, three triples, 76 total bases and 26 runs batted in.

Conference swim meets start on Friday

Catawba County’s swim teams are preparing to compete in their respective conference meets, which start Friday in Valdese.

The Northwestern 3A/4A meet is Friday at 4 p.m. at the Valdese Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Catawba Valley 2A squads meet at the same location Saturday at 8 a.m. for their meet.

Last year, the two meets combined to crown four champions in different schools, including the East Burke and South Caldwell boys and St. Stephens and Draughn girls.

The Lady Indians will try to defend their crown, despite losing six senior swimmers to graduation.

Indians' Nelson steps down, takes job in S.C.

Chris Nelson, head coach of the St. Stephens boys soccer program for two seasons, will step down Friday.

Nelson will become an athletic director in Colleton County, S.C.
He was offered the job Monday, accepted it and informed the players of his decision Tuesday.

“I’m resigning the teaching and coaching position at the end of this semester,” Nelson said in a phone interview.

The 27-year-old, who also assisted coach Chuck Davis with the girls soccer program at St. Stephens, directed the Indians to a 19-14-3 record during his coaching tenure at the school.

Red Devils, Tigers, Indians rank in top five

Fred T. Foard, St. Stephens and Newton-Conover’s wrestling teams remain among the top five teams in this week’s dual team coaches poll.

The Tigers (22-1) lost first place votes in the latest poll.

They trail Orange by 26 votes, a closer margin than the last poll Jan. 4.
St. Stephens remains in fifth place in the 3A ranks.

In 2A, Newton-Conover remains in second place, trailing Piedmont, while Bandys remains slightly outside the top five.

Pow wowed: Indians topple Watauga at home

Keeping pace near the top of the Northwestern conference, the St. Stephens boys basketball survived small runs by Watauga to win its fourth NWC game of the season.

“You have to win conference games, especially conference games at home,” said Indians coach Murphy Post. “Watauga is a good team. Any chance we have to win a conference game at home, that’s big for us, as far as playoff position and trying to contend to move up the ladder a little bit.”

Kerigan Fairley scored 16 points and Dillion Spencer added 11 points to lead the Indians (12-6, 4-2).

PREP NOTEBOOK: LRDs pick up another CVAC win

Behind 18 points each from Dasia Tipps and Kadesha Gibbs, the Newton-Conover girls basketball team improved to 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A with a 78-28 thrashing of West Caldwell on Tuesday.

Taylor Petty added 16 points for N-C in the victory, while Shynese Whitener scored 11 points.

Draughn 58, Maiden 52

Despite being outscored by four points in the final quarter, the Lady Wildcats edged the Lady Blue Devils in Valdese on Tuesday.

Lauren Duckworth scored a game-high 22 points for Draughn (10-7, 3-4), while Haley Broadwell added 12 points.

Magic hang on to beat Bobcats, 96-89

ORLANDO, Fla. — Dwight Howard had 25 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic past the Charlotte Bobcats 96-89 Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

Jameer Nelson scored 17 points, Hedo Turkoglu had 15 and Von Wafer 13 as the Magic won for the 10th time in 12 games.

Gerald Henderson had 22 points for Charlotte, which has lost eight of its last nine. The Bobcats are also winless in their last five trips to Orlando.

Bandys' Gilliam healthy, awaiting baseball season

Nearly three months to the day his pick-up truck rolled three times in a ditch near Balls Creek Road, Jackson Gilliam is looking forward to spring baseball season.

Gilliam, a 5-foot-11-.inch junior at Bandys, suffered damage to his vertebrae, right hip, shoulder blade and face, and suffered from a concussion, internal bleeding and a collapsed lung from the accident.

The outlook on his health was fair, at best.

“He wasn’t supposed to be released from anything for three months of the date of the accident,” said Jackson’s mother, Janet.
