Newton-Conover's attempt to three-peat as 2A dual team state champions ended Tuesday with a 6-0 loss to Shelby, the top-ranked tennis team in the state.

The Red Devils, who finish the season with a 16-5 record, battled a number of injuries to players, which didn't make trying to knock off the Golden Lions an easy task.

Crawdads final game with Kannapolis rained out

May 9, 2012

Tuesday's minor league baseball game between the Hickory Crawdads and Kannapolis Intimidators was postponed due to inclement weather.

A make-up date has not been announced, but will be made for a later date.

The Crawdads return home Thursday for the first game of a four-game tilt against the Savannah Sand Gnats. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Maiden’s Zack Huffman tries to shoulder the load

In a Feb. 29 scrimmage against Wilkes Central’s Garrett Lakey, Maiden’s Zack Huffman was leading 6-1, 4-0.

Suddenly, he felt a weird sensation in his arm that changed the outlook of not only the match, but his whole senior season.

Behind 17 hits, the Maiden Blue Devils won the 2012 Catawba Valley 2A baseball tournament final against Draughn at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night, 12-3.

Seniors Dustin Hipps and Jason Gantt led the charge with four-hit performances at the plate.

Newton-Conover negotiating with coaching finalist

Newton-Conover High School may have its next football coach by early next week.

NCHS Principal Kevin Campbell said Monday the school narrowed its list of candidates down to a final name, and officials are nailing down final details.

WEEKEND RECAP: N-C girls win 2A Regional title

Newton-Conover won the 2A Western Regional championship in girls track and field Saturday at Polk County High School.

The Lady Red Devils scored 67 points, which edged Draughn's 55 points to claim to regional title.

Sadasia Tipps led Newton-Conover with atitle in the long jump. She also finished second in the triple jump.

Crawdads sweep weekend set with Kannapolis

The Hickory Crawdads won two games this past week against the Kannapolis Intimidators, taking a 6-0 Saturday victory and winning 5-3 on Sunday.

Hickory 6, Kannapolis 0

Zach Cone led the 'Dads (18-11) on Saturday with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate that included a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Maiden freshman Corbin Boyles running to goals

Maiden freshman and distance runner Corbin Boyles is running toward a 2A Western Regional title in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs this Saturday at Polk County High School.

He is hoping to compete for a 2A state title in those two events, as well as become a future Olympian.
