Cavaliers eliminate Red Devils in overtime

February 22, 2012

Newton-Conover’s chance to return to the Western Regional final — gone.

The Lady Red Devils (25-4) fell behind early to East Burke (19-9), but managed to take the game into overtime.

With the loss of senior leader Shynese Whitener to fouls, the LRDs fell behind late in the extra session and never caught up, falling 64-62 in the second round of the playoffs Wednesday.

“I’m proud of them,” N-C coach Ike Williams said of his team. “We had a great run. You have to give East Burke all the credit in the world. They came in with a good game plan, ready to play and played hard.”

Huskies eliminate Indians for second-straight year

February 21, 2012

New year. Same teams. Same result.

The Indians (15-12) fell behind in the second quarter and never caught up, losing to the Huskies (13-10) at home.

“(Huss) really came on late in the year it seems,” said Indians coach Murphy Post. “I think they are playing their best ball right now.”

Proving its right to be a playoff team, Saint took an 8-2 lead early in the ball game.

Catawba native Lutz helps spark N.C. State Wolfpack

February 20, 2012

RALEIGH — Bobby Lutz and Orlando Early know the pressure facing North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried when he calls a play late in a tight game or tries to discern team morale after a tough loss.

The assistants have been there before as head coaches running their own programs.

With their experience on the Wolfpack bench, it's no coincidence the program is having its best season in six years. Lutz spent a dozen years as Charlotte's head coach; Early spent five years as head coach at Louisiana-Monroe.
