Bunker Hill 10, Newton-Conover 3

The Lady Bears won a conference road game against the Lady Red Devils in Newton on Friday.

Courtney Adsit and Desirae Bebber both drove in two RBIs each to lead Bunker Hill, who improves to 3-1 in conference play.

Cierra Jones had two hits for the Lady Red Devils, who fall to 0-3 in the CVAC.

Kadi O'Shell pitched seven innings, allowing three runs and two walks, while striking out 10 Newton-Conover batters. N-C's Catherine Jones suffered the loss.

Duke expects Austin Rivers' NBA decision next week

DURHAM — Duke expects freshman guard Austin Rivers to decide next week whether he will enter the NBA draft.

Team spokesman Matt Plizga said Friday that Rivers will discuss his future plans with his family this weekend, and an announcement on his future is expected next week.

The son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers averaged a team-leading 15.5 points and was a unanimous selection as the ACC's rookie of the year.

Foard falls to defending tennis champ Watauga

Fred T. Foard fell 9-0 at home to the defending conference champion Watauga on Thursday.

The Tigers (0-8, 0-5) were solid in doubles, including close matches with the teams of Russell Michaels and Samuel Hefner, and Jil Patel and Jacob Bechtol.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Jones, Trojans top Blue Devils

Bandys won a battle of softball heavyweights in the Catawba Valley 2A on Thursday.

Breanna Jones drove in three RBIs on a 3-for-3 day at the plate, leading the Lady Trojans (4-2, 2-1) to the key 4-2 conference win against Maiden (8-2, 3-1).

Tied 2-2 in the sixth inning, the Trojans struck with two runs to take the lead for good.

After Bandys’ Scarlett Harris reached base on a single and Rachel Cox was hit by a pitch, Jones drove in both runners on her second double of the game.

The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning behind runs from Harris and Taylor Sigmon.

Holmes, Franklin lead Saint in 6-1 rout of Foard

The tandem of freshman Olivia Holmes and junior Macy Franklin was lethal on the soccer field Wednesday.

The duo scored five of St. Stephens’ six goals, earning the Lady Indians a conference rivalry game victory against Fred T. Foard, 6-1, in Hickory.

“We looked like a pretty good team tonight,” said Indians coach Chuck Davis. “We put our passes together well and finished. It took us a little while to take a shot, but once we did, it was nice.”

St. Stephens (6-1-1, 2-0-0) raced out to a 5-0 halftime lead behind Holmes and Franklin.

Fred T. Foard improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Northwestern 3A/4A with a victory on the softball field Wednesday against St. Stephens in Hickory.

The Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first. Following her double, Ashley Oliver scored later in the inning on a throwing error at first base.

Centerfielder Addie Bolick made it a 2-0 Foard lead in the top of the fourth.

Bolick doubled and advanced twice on passed balls, including a run scored at home plate.

Bolick scored again in the top of the sixth inning, when teammate Rebecca Rowe drove her home on an RBI double.

UNC's Marshall out of cast after wrist surgery

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall is out of his cast following surgery on his broken right wrist.

In a text message to The Associated Press on Wednesday, Marshall's father Dennis said his son is wearing a removable splint now. Marshall said on Twitter he had shed the cast earlier in the afternoon.

Dennis Marshall said it was still too early to know if his son could play against Ohio on Friday in the NCAA tournament's round of 16 in St. Louis. He said his son "hasn't been ruled out, but not cleared to play either."

Shuberts together on Foard softball team

When David Shubert stopped coaching the Fred T. Foard softball program in 1996, he didn’t know that he would return 16 years later to coach his daughter, Lexi.

The Shuberts are both members of the Lady Tigers softball program, which is off to an 8-0 start this season, including 3-0 in the Northwestern 3A/4A.

David — who not only coached the Foard softball program (1991-96), but also coached the school’s basketball program from 1992-98 — said he remembered his time as hoops coach, when his young daughter attended the games.
