Former Trojan Sigmon chosen to SoCon second team

Former Bandys High School and current Western Carolina Catamount softball player Taylor Sigmon has been named to the Southern Conference preseason second team, at first base, as voted on by the league coaches.

Sigmon, a sophomore from Catawba, was the only Catamount freshman from the 2013 season to play in all 56 games.

Saint, Foard seniors commemorate college signings

A pair of Catawba County athletes signed to play college athletics earlier this week.

St. Stephens volleyball standout Katelyn Houser will play at Catawba Valley Community College this fall.

Fred T. Foard baseball player Carson Bryant also signed with the Bucs.

BREAKING: Snow affects sports schedule again

For the second-straight day, snow has caused the prep sports schedule to change.

Below is a look at these changes and their new times:

Seniors stand tall, Red Devils clinch SD-7 title

Six seniors have been the driving force for the Newton-Conover wrestling team this season.

On Friday night, they honored the program the only way they knew how — winning.

The Red Devils won 11 of their 13 matches against West Caldwell, clinching the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A championship with a 54-9 victory against the Warriors.

Beam greets community, described as ‘ball of fire’

More than 100 people turned out at Newton-Conover High School on Thursday night to meet their new head football coach, Matt Beam.

Beam spoke to everyone in attendance before talking with parents, players and supporters one on one.

They say its hard to beat a team once and even harder to do it twice.

The Newton-Conover boys basketball team has that opportunity tonight on the road against West Caldwell.

The Red Devils have already beaten the Warriors 59-56 on Dec. 19, 2013 in both team’s conference openers.

Saint’s McGinnis turns serious injury into inspiration

A debilitating back injury cost Jordan McGinnis most of his junior season on the basketball court.

The St. Stephens senior turned his agony on the court into creativity off it.

McGinnis first discovered the back injury during the summer of 2012 while attending a recruit camp at West Virginia University.

Bliss’ five 3-pointers pace Fred T. Foard in win

January 21, 2014

Based on his 17-point performance Tuesday against rival St. Stephens, Foard’s Trey Bliss had the appropriate first name.

The junior guard made five 3-pointers in a 60-53 victory on the road against St. Stephens.
