Panthers draw record crowd to Wofford College

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Carolina Panthers drew record crowds to their training camp at Wofford College this year, Spartanburg tourism officials say.

The team completed training camp at Wofford last week and headed home to Charlotte.

The Spartanburg Convention and Visitors Bureau said Thursday the team attracted more than 44,000 people to the practices between July 27 and Aug. 15.

Lady Tigers come back from down 2-1, beat Bears

Down two sets in its home volleyball game against Bunker Hill on Monday, the Fred T. Foard volleyball team rallied.

The Lady Tigers (3-0), who trailed 2-1 against the Lady Bears (0-4), fought back to win the fourth set.

Foard went on to win the deciding fifth set to remain unbeaten, 25-20, 18-25, 18-25, 27-25 and 15-8.

CVCC pitcher Whaley heading to Appalachian State

Catawba Valley Community College and Hickory Post 48 pitcher Robert Whaley has committed to play baseball for Appalachian State next fall.

Whaley spent this past spring pitching for CVCC, helping them make it to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series.

The Maiden Lady Blue Devil volleyball team beat the Lincoln Charter Lady Eagles in Maiden on Monday in three-straight sets, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-23.

Mckenzie Garrison led Maiden (3-1) with 14 kills, while Kha Xiong added six kills. Kalie Johnson assisted on 14 Maiden kills, while Hannah Martin assisted on 10 kills.

Young, Mustangs tally 501 yards, beat Red Devils

Brint Russell’s debut as Newton-Conover head football coach was memorable — for all the wrong reasons.

The Red Devils’ defense struggled, giving up 510 total yards, including 351 passing from East Lincoln quarterback Garrett Young, as the Mustangs went on to win in Denver, 35-21.

PREP ROUND-UP: Wolves overcome fumbles, Maiden

Lincolnton picked up a tight two-point victory at home, spoiling Frank Snider's debut as head coach for the Maiden Blue Devils.

The Wolves (1-0) took a 2-0 lead in the second quarter when Maiden starting quarterback Jake McRee fumbled a snap in the end zone, fell on top of it and was tackled by a host of Lincolnton defenders, resulting in a safety.

Panthers top Dolphins in final preseason home game

The Carolina Panthers finished up their home preseason slate Friday with a 23-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Bank of America Stadium.

Less than a week after suffering a 26-13 loss to the Houston Texans in the preseason opener, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he was pleased with what he saw from his team.

Blast by De La Cruz lifts Sand Gnats past 'Dads

In a game that featured three lead changes, two ties and three combined errors by both squads, Savannah got the better of Hickory on the baseball diamond Thursday.

Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the Sand Gnats (24-28 in the second half, 65-54 overall) powered ahead with a three-run homer by Yucarybert De La Cruz, pulling ahead for good en route to winning 6-5 at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The defending 2A state volleyball champion Newton-Conover Lady Red Devils opened their season with a loss Thursday at North Iredell, 25-12, 25-6 and 25-10.

The Lady Red Devils (1-0) play again this Saturday at Davidson College's volleyball tournament.
