Justin Harper continuing football dream in Canada

When his dream of playing professional football nearly ended, Justin Harper remained positive.

Now, the former Bandys and Virginia Tech standout wide receiver is playing football in Canada for the Saskatechwan Roughriders, who kick off their season tonight against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Selen, Crawdads blast Intimidators on the road

Scoring 11 runs in the first three innings, the Hickory Crawdads pulled out and stayed ahead of the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday for the 13-9 road victory.

Alejandro Selen led Hickory (6-2 in the second half, 42-35 overall) with four RBIs, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

Trever Adams, Jordan Akins and Nick Urbanus added two RBIs each for the Crawdads.

Bobcats select Kidd-Gilchrist, Taylor in NBA Draft

CHARLOTTE — Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is hoping to do for the Charlotte Bobcats what Cam Newton did for the Carolina Panthers.

That means giving them a face of the franchise and cultivating a winning culture.

"I hope so," said Kidd-Gilchrist. "I definitely hope I can do something like that, yeah. I'm a winner, so I don't see why not."

Owner Michael Jordan is banking on it.

Red Devils host Panthers in first 7-on-7 drills

Sign-ups open for Soliders Reunion events

The Newton Recreation Department is currently holding sign-ups for several events for this August's Soldiers Reunion.

These events include the annual horseshoe tournament, 5K Run/Walk and the softball tournament.

The 2012 Soldiers Reunion Horseshoe Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at Westside/Jaycee Park.

Bobcats like No. 2, but will listen to all offers

CHARLOTTE — General manager Rich Cho says it will take "something enticing" for the Bobcats to trade away the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft.

Cho won't say exactly what that entails.

For now the Bobcats haven't received a tantalizing enough offer and still own the rights to the No. 2 pick, although that could certainly change before the start of Thursday night's NBA draft.

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler talks art, wrestling

Wrestling superstar and WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler visited L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday at the Hickory Crawdads game against the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

During his time at the game, O-N-E Sports Editor Cody Dalton spoke to Lawler and interviewed him on a variety of topics.

Caldwell Co. ousts Hickory, ties West Division

Caldwell County Post 29 avenged a loss earlier in the season to Hickory Post 48, picking up a 7-5 victory at M.S Deal Stadium in Granite Falls on Tuesday.

Hickory (15-2, 10-2) and Caldwell County (16-2, 9-2) are tied atop the Area IV West Division. Both have two Western Division losses.

Post 48 handed Post 29 a 9-0 defeat on June 4, giving Caldwell County its first loss of the season.

Crawdads crush Intimidators, grow division lead

June 27, 2012

Leading 1-0 late in their game Tuesday, the Hickory Crawdads scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull away from the Kannapolis Intimidators, winning on the road, 7-1.

With the victory, the Crawdads' lead in the Northern Division grows to 1.5 games over the Intimidators.

82 junior golfers play CVJGT event at Rock Barn

The Catawba Valley Junior Golf Tour (CVJGT) made its third stop of the season at Rock Barn Golf and Spa’s Jackson Course on Monday.
