Post 48 opener versus Rutherford rained out

Hickory Post 48's season opener on the road against Rutherford County Post 423 was rained out Monday.

Coach Fore Rembert said the team plans to make up the game, potentially on Friday, June 22.

Post 48 plays its first game of the season Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Shelby Post 82 at Henkel-Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds.

Huffman's slam helps Bucs win first tourney game

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team staved off elimination by winning its first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series game on Saturday, defeating the No. 7 Community College of Rhode Island Knights, 11-5.

Trailing 5-3, the Bucs (37-16) scored eight runs in their half of the seventh inning, including a grand slam by Brett Huffman.

Khane continues Hendrick roll with Coke 600 win

CONCORD — Kasey Kahne powered to victory in the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, taking NASCAR's longest race for the third time for his first win with Hendrick Motorsports.

Kahne also gave car owner Rick Hendrick his 201st Sprint Cup series victory.

Kahne crossed the finish line nearly 5 seconds ahead of Denny Hamlin. Kyle Busch was third and series points leader Greg Biffle fourth.

Oliver's HR lifts Foard to 3A West Regional title

For the first time since 1998, Fred T. Foard will play for a softball state championship.

A two-run home run by Foard third baseman Ashley Oliver in the top of the sixth over right field helped the Lady Tigers (25-4) advance to next weekend's state championship series in Raleigh.

Drew Robinson's walk-off RBI lifts Hickory, 8-7

A single by Drew Robinson in the bottom of the ninth gave the Hickory Crawdads a walkoff win against the Lexington Legends on Friday before a packed house of 4,853 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The Legends (25-22) led 4-3 before the bottom of the seventh inning when the 'Dads struck for four runs, including a two-RBI single by Hanser Alberto.

Beason comes to teammate Newton's defense

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Jon Beason may not play offensive tackle, but he's certainly not afraid to protect his quarterback.

Beason, the Panthers' three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, fired back Friday at San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith via Twitter after comments he perceived were a slam on Carolina teammate Cam Newton.

Foard headed to state softball title series

Fred T. Foard defeated North Iredell 2-0 Friday night to clinch the 3A West Regional softball title.

The Lady Tigers plated two runs on a sixth-inning homer by Ashley Oliver in the victory, Foard's second over North Iredell in as many nights.

Foard now faces C.B. Aycock or Western Alamance in a best-of-three state championship series June 1-2.

Four-run fourth helps give Tigers 1-0 series lead

After giving up its first runs this postseason, the Fred T. Foard softball team trailed 2-0 in the middle of the fourth inning of its playoff game against North Iredell on Thursday.

Not willing to crumble under the pressure, the Lady Tigers scored four runs on four hits and a walk in the fourth inning, lifting them to a 4-2 victory against the Lady Raiders.

Legends best Crawdads on Thursday, 7-3

Trailing 3-2 after five innings, the Lexington Legends scored five runs in the final four innings to pull away with the 7-3 victory against the Hickory Crawdads on Thursday at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Four of those runs came in two innings, including two each in the top of the sixth and top of the ninth.
