Johnson rushes for 337 yards, six TDs in rivalry win

Going into Friday’s game at Gurley Stadium, Maiden quarterback Matt Johnson never beat the Red Devils of Newton-Conover.

“Not in middle school and not in high school,” the senior said. “I have never done it.”

He made up for all those losses — and then some.

Johnson rushed for 337 yards and six touchdowns to help lift the Blue Devils to a 62-39 victory over Newton-Conover.

The win was the first by Maiden in the series since 2006, and it was also the first time Maiden’s Brian Brown scored a victory as head coach against Newton-Conover.

Lady Tigers pound Panthers, prepare for N-C

Even at its worst, Foard was the best.

The Lady Tigers volleyball team (8-3, 3-1) earned another Northwestern Conference volleyball victory in decisive fashion at home Thursday against Hibriten, 25-13, 25-12, 25-7.

In spite of the victory, Foard coach Alison Yount was not pleased with her team’s efforts.

“The score doesn’t look like we played bad, but in my opinion, we played pretty poorly,” Yount said. “We worked hard in the third game and played a lot better than we did in the first two games. Our heads just weren’t in the game”

Davis chasing school history, relatives

Three numbers — 2,029, 3,697 and one — are being eyed by Bunker Hill running back Reggie Davis.

The senior, who surpassed the 3,000-yard mark for his career last Friday against Fred T. Foard, is chasing the school’s single-season rushing mark of 2,029 yards and the career rushing record of 3,697 yards.

Davis said his accomplishment Friday made him even hungrier.

Panthers linebacker Jon Beason out for season

Panthers linebacker Jon Beason is out for the season after tearing his left achilles tendon.

According to the Panthers website, an MRI on Monday revealed the injury, which will cause Beason to miss the entire 2011 season.

Beason left on a cart in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. Beason had been limited in practice because of a left ankle injury. He fell to the turf on a 48-yard touchdown pass by tight end Jeff King.
