Xiong, Hernandez pace Bears in route of Ironmen

After beating Cherryville 4-1 earlier this season, the Bunker Hill soccer team was even more impressive in its second outing against the Ironmen.

Paced by a three-goal performance from freshman Richard Xiong, the Bears blanked Cherryville 7-0 in Claremont on Wednesday.

BREAKING: 'Dads, Rangers reach two-year extension

The Hickory Crawdads announced on Wednesday that their partnership with the Texas Rangers has been extended.

The 'Dads and Rangers came to an agreement that will extend their Player Development Contract through the end of the 2014 season.

The Crawdads have been affiliated with the Texas Rangers since the 2009 campaign.

Trojans rally to beat Red Devils on volleyball court

Down 2-0 in its volleyball match against Newton-Conover on Tuesday, it looked as if Bandys would start its conference season with a loss.

However, a thunderous rally late in the match helped propel the Lady Trojans to the 3-2 victory over the Lady Red Devils 20-25, 17-25, 25-20, 27-25 and 15-11.

The Bunker Hill tennis team improved to 2-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A with a 7-2 victory over South Iredell on Tuesday.

The Bears (2-6, 2-1) won four singles matches, but swept all of their doubles competition to pick up the conference win.

Stewart isn't expecting any issues with Kenseth

CONCORD — Tony Stewart joked Tuesday that his two-handed toss of his helmet at Matt Kenseth was "not bad for a 41-year-old who doesn't work out."

Aside from that, Stewart said he's not expecting any drama between the two drivers despite promising to run over Kenseth every chance he gets this season.

BREAKING NEWS: Kahny hired as Blue Devils' coach

Maiden High School has found the man for its boys basketball head coaching job.

Patrick Kahny, a 55-year-old coaching veteran, was officially approved by the Catawba County Board of Education on Monday night to be the Blue Devils next boys basketball coach.

Kahny replaces Doug Miller, who stepped down in March after four seasons as Maiden coach and a 19-75 coaching record.

Lady Blue Devils earn fifth win, top Saint on court

August 27, 2012

Maiden continued its early season roll on the tennis court, picking up an 8-1 victory over St. Stephens in Hickory on Monday.

The Lady Blue Devils improve to 5-1 overall on the season.

The St. Stephens volleyball team improved to 6-0 on the season with a sweep Monday over the Lady Bears 25-23, 25-15 and 25-15.

Marisa Jones led the Lady Indians with nine kills, Breanna Hall added seven kills and Jenna Boliek tallied six kills.

Megan Fair led Bunker Hill (1-6) with 10 kills, Krissy Helms tallied 18 assists and Brooke Blevins recorded 23 digs.

Bobcats hire assistant coaches Winters, Leibovitz

CHARLOTTE — The Bobcats have announced they've hired Brian Winters and Dan Leibovitz as assistant coaches.

Winters and Leibovitz will join Stephen Silas and Rick Brunson, who officially signed with the team in July, as part of new coach Mike Dunlap's staff.
