Hernandez, Xiong guide Bunker HIll past Bandys

The breakthrough season for Bunker Hill on the soccer field continued Tuesday in Catawba.

Behind two goals each from Joel Hernandez and Richard Xiong, the Bears knocked off Bandys on the road for their sixth victory.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Tuesday's scores, postponements

Four prep contests in soccer and tennis were postponed on Tuesday due to weather.

Bunker Hill at Bandys and Maiden at Draughn tennis will both be played on Wednesday, weather permitting.

Fred. Foard at Hickory soccer, which was postponed from Monday, was moved to Thursday.

Newton-Conover hosts West Caldwell next Monday for a pivotal soccer match.

CVCC tops Spartanburg Methodist, moves to 18-0

The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team won its 18th straight volleyball game on the road Tuesday against Spartanburg Methodist 25-18, 25-15 and 25-22.

Jennifer Beatty led the Lady Bucs (18-0, 8-0) with 10 kills, 17 digs, one ace, one assist and two blocks.

Lacy Goodson also tallied 27 assists for CVCC.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Indians tie 2-2 with Pioneers

St. Stephens tied on the soccer field Monday with Northwestern 3A/4A leader Watauga.

Nich Bryant and Luke Bruce both scored goals for the Indians (8-5-2, 3-1-2). Bryant also earned an assist on Bruce's goal.

Watauga's record after Monday's contest is 11-1-3 overall and 4-0-2 in conference play.

Several area contests postponed

L-R's Green named SAC defensive player of the week

Lenoir-Rhyne's Michael Green was named the South Atlantic Conference football defensive player of the week, league officials announced on Monday afternoon.

Green, a junior safety from Kingsland, Ga., picked off two passes in the first half and finished with eight tackles in L-R's 52-10 victory over North Greenville last Saturday night at home.

Red Devils hosting golf tournament on Oct. 13

Newton-Conover High School is hosting its second annual Athletics Golf Tournament next Saturday, Oct. 13 at River Oaks Golf Club in Statesville.

There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the event. Sign in starts at 8:30 a.m.

The cost per player is $60, which includes lunch.

Mulligans and skirts are also available for purchase.

Bryant field goal leads Falcons past Panther 30-28

ATLANTA — Matt Ryan took an awful beating.

Another win for the Atlanta Falcons will make the pain a lot easier to take.

Shaking off a career-high seven sacks, Ryan completed a 59-yard pass to Roddy White with about a minute remaining, setting up Matt Bryant's 40-yard field goal that kept the Falcons perfect on the season with a wild 30-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

ASU tallies 684 yards, routs Chanticleers 55-14

Pulling ahead 21-0 after the first quarter, Appalachian State cruised to a 55-14 victory against visiting Coastal Carolina on Saturday in Boone.

The Mountaineers tallied 684 yards in the contest — their most in a game since the 2009 season.

Lenoir-Rhyne crusades past North Greenville, 52-10

After a crushing 47-23 loss at Carson-Newman two weeks ago, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University had a lot of time to ponder the defeat after a bye week.

With North Greenville standing in the way their way, the Bears put the tough loss to the Eagles behind them by tallying 551 yards of total offense in a 52-10 win in Hickory on Saturday.

Late TD, turnover propel N-C to Homecoming win

A touchdown pass from Kevin Cline to Sam Avis with 4:27 left in the third quarter ended up being the game-winning score, helping Newton-Conover pick up a Homecoming victory against East Burke on Friday at Gurley Stadium.

"That was just a physically tough football game," said N-C coach Brint Russell. "I'm proud of our kid's effort."
