PREP NOTEBOOK: Indians pick up big win on court

After finishing 0-12 on the court a season ago, the St. Stephens tennis team picked up a hard-fought 5-4 victory against the Bunker Hill Bears on Tuesday in Claremont.

"This was a big win for the kids," said Lady Indians coach Todd Davis.

Higley, Suns walkoff on 'Dads in ninth inning, 4-3

HAGERSTOWN, MD. — Hagerstown stretched its advantage in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division to 1.5 games over the Hickory Crawdads with a dramatic 4-3 walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday.

Trailing 3-1 entering the ninth inning, Hickory (27-24 in the second half, 64-56 overall) tied the contest up on a pair of RBI singles from Jorge Alfaro and Alejandro Selen.

'Dads Alfaro tries to keep promise made to parents

Leaving his native Colombia at age 15, Jorge Alfaro promised both his parents that he would make something of his baseball career.

Four years after that promise, the 19-year-old catcher for the Hickory Crawdads is continuing to try and move up the minor league baseball system.

The first day of fall prep sports started Tuesday with a full slate of games, including volleyball, girls tennis and boys soccer.

Hornets suffer first loss against Golden Bears, 20-14

Facing their first road test of the season on Saturday, the Catawba County Hornets suffered their first setback of the season, falling to the Richmond County Golden Bears, 20-14.

The Hornets fall to 2-1 in the Central Carolinas Football League, while the Golden Bears improve to 1-2.

Texans top Panthers in preseason opener, 26-13

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers kicked off a much anticipated year of football Saturday, but that didn’t stop the Houston Texans from stealing the show.

Tied 13-13 at halftime, the Texans scored 13 unanswered second-half points on their way to a 26-13 preseason victory over the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

Panthers give RB Stewart 5-year contract extension

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers reached a five-year contract extension with running back Jonathan Stewart on Saturday.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says the team is "thrilled" to keep Stewart around to work with fellow running back DeAngelo Williams, who received a five-year contract last year, and new fullback Mike Tolbert.

The new deal keeps Stewart a Panther through 2017.

Hickory hosts Bandys in final football scrimmage

With exactly a week until they kick of their seasons, the Hickory Red Tornadoes hosted the Bandys Trojans on Friday in the final scrimmage of the preseason.

Both varsity squads competed in a number of different drills, including blocking, rushing, passing and catching.

The scrimmage finished with a live, game situation for both team’s offenses and defenses.

Catawba Co. Hornets go for 3-0 against Golden Bears

After a week off, the Catawba County Hornets semi-pro football team is back in action this Saturday when it travels to take on the Richmond County Golden Bears (0-3).

The Hornets are coming off of a thrilling 6-0 victory over the Iredell Warriors two weeks ago — the team’s first win against Warriors in its last 16 tries.

Panthers waive/injured OT Ziemba; sign G Ramsey
