Penske waiting for more info on Allmendinger

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — AJ Allmendinger was silent Sunday, a day after NASCAR suspended him for failing a random drug test.

Penske Racing, which gave Allmendinger the biggest break of his career this season, is withholding judgment until NASCAR's system has been completed.

Where that leaves the 30-year-old driver remains to be seen.

Hickory (18-5) took an early 3-0 first-inning lead in the ball game behind an RBI single from Cole McGraw and two-RBI double from Jordan Eckard.

Harper grabs team-high 4 passes, 'Riders win again

Catawba native Justin Harper caught a team-high four passes for 34 yards, helping the Saskatchewan Roughriders remain undefeated on the season with a 17-1 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos.

With his offensive totals on Sunday, Harper's season receiving stats are six catches for 66 yards.

Kevin Harvick becomes father day after Daytona

CHARLOTTE — Kevin Harvick became a father on Sunday, a day after his wife flew home unexpectedly from Daytona International Speedway.

Keelan Paul Harvick was born Sunday in North Carolina. He is the first child for Kevin and DeLana Harvick.

The Hickory Crawdads took a 2-1 series advantage over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Friday with a 5-2 victory at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The 'Dads (12-4, 48-37) were led by a four-run second inning that included a two-RBI single from Nick Urbanus, an RBI-single by Rougned Odor and a ground out by Jordan Akins that also plated a run.

App State hires OSU's Jones as baseball coach

BOONE — Appalachian State has hired Oklahoma State assistant Billy Jones as its new baseball coach.

The school on Friday chose Jones to replace Chris Pollard after he left last month to take over at Duke.

Jones spent the past eight seasons on the Cowboys' staff. Before that, he was an assistant at North Carolina State from 2002-04, and he also has coached at Oregon State and Arizona State.

Cole McGraw’s 5 RBIs lifts Hickory to next round

Continuing its offensive output this postseason, Hickory Post 48 scored more than 10 runs for the third-straight playoff game, knocking off Kings Mountain at Henkel-Alley Field on Thursday, 12-10.

With the 3-0 series win, Hickory (18-4) advances to the second round of the playoffs, where it meets the Gaston Braves (13-4), who swept Henderson County.

Shorebirds best Crawdads in game two of series

After being one-hit against Hickory on the Fourth of July, the Delmarva Shorebirds returned the favor in game two of the series, handing the 'Dads a 6-4 loss at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday.

The Shorebirds (4-10 in the second half, 32-51 overall) were powered by a two-run fourth inning and three-run sixth frame, overcoming a 4-2 deficit in the game to take the lead for good.
