Panthers try to stop AFC South champion Texans

HOUSTON — The setbacks finally seemed to catch up to the Houston Texans in Cincinnati last week.

It had all been going remarkably well — while one key player after another went down with a major injury, Houston somehow continued to win.

At last, the Texans had run into a team good enough to beat them, and the Bengals had them down 16-3 at halftime, and 19-13 with just over two minutes left.

But not even that was too much for depleted Houston to overcome.

Indians split with South Caldwell on basketball court

Down 45-39 entering the fourth quarter, the St. Stephens boys basketball team scored 20 points in the final quarter, lifting them past South Caldwell, 59-55, for its first conference win of the season.

Drew Starkey scored a career-high 19 points, while Jordan James added 15 points in the victory for St. Stephens (6-3, 1-1).

Jordan Propst scored 30 points, leading South Caldwell (3-5, 0-2).

Lady Trojans, N-C boys victorious

Trailing 38-37 entering the fourth quarter, the Bandys girls basketball team (8-0, 2-0) scored 14 fourth-quarter points to win the first of two rivalry games this season with Newton-Conover.

Bandys’ Madi Story scored 15 points and her sister, Jesse, added 11 points in the victory.

The Lady Red Devils, who went 13-1 last season in the CVAC 2A, fall to 1-1 in the CVAC and 5-2 overall.

Shynese Whitener led N-C with 15 points, while Taylor Petty and Kadesha Gibbs added 10 points each.

Bobcats land shooting guard Williams from Warriors

CHARLOTTE — Bobcats coach Paul Silas got what he wanted — a long-range shooter.

Charlotte signed shooting guard Reggie Williams to a two-year contract Thursday, filling one of the team's biggest needs.

But the team also announced Williams will have surgery in the coming days to repair a tear of the lateral meniscus in his left knee. He's expected to be sidelined for approximately six to eight weeks with the pre-existing injury.
