BREAKING NEWS: Panthers fire GM Marty Hurney

If the Carolina Panthers are going to become the second team to start 1-5 and make it to the playoffs, it won't be under General Manager Marty Hurney.

Hurney was relieved of his duties early Monday morning, the team announced. He had served as the team's GM since 2002.

Marred by a few disputable calls late in their game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Panthers dropped their fifth contest of the season, 19-14, at Bank of America Stadium in front of 73,981 fans.

14-point fourth quarter helps Wofford stun ASU

Behind 14 fourth quarter points, eighth-ranked Wofford stunned No. 13 Appalachian State, 38-28, on the football field Saturday in Boone at Kidd-Brewer Stadium.

It was the first time since 2002 that ASU (5-3, 3-2) had lost at home to Wofford (6-1, 4-1).

Bears score 31-straight points, knock off Mars Hill

Lenoir-Rhyne rallied from an 18-point deficit to stun Mars Hill on the football field Saturday, 34-21, in a South Atlantic Conference showdown at Moretz Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS: 3 move on, 4 eliminated

The first round of the prep volleyball playoffs was held on Saturday. Seven Catawba County teams were in action.

After these games were over, three Catawba County schools moved on, including Maiden, Newton-Conover and St. Stephens.

Four schools had their seasons ended, including Bandys, Bunker Hill, Fred T. Foard and Hickory.

South Iredell's 19-game win steak in the Catawba Valley 2A is over after Newton-Conover knocked off the Vikings 31-21 in Troutman on Friday.

The game's result ties the conference standings three ways between Newton-Conover (7-3, 5-1), South Iredell (8-2, 5-1) and Maiden (7-3, 5-1).

Blue Devils tally third-straight shutout, oust Bears

The Maiden football team picked up its third-straight shut out of the season on Friday, knocking off Bunker Hill 24-0 during the Blue Devils' Homecoming game.

FOOTBALL ROUND-UP: Hickory beats St. Stephens

Matt Williams return to St. Stephens High School was a successful one.

The sophomore quarterback, who spent last season with the Indians, threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Reid, which helped Hickory defeat St. Stephens 10-0 on Friday.

The Red Tornadoes (6-4, 3-2) added a 33-yard field goal from Michael Bradshaw in the victory.

Saint swimmer Sava Turcanu commits to Harvard

A St. Stephens senior swimmer is heading to the Ivy League next fall.

Saint's Sava Turcanu has announced that he has committed to attend Harvard University after he graduates from high school this spring.

Turcanu has won three state titles at St. Stephens High School, including two at last year's 3A state meet in Cary.
