L-R's Green wins SAC's top defender award again

Lenoir-Rhyne's Michael Green has been named the South Atlantic Conference defensive player of the week, league officials announced on Monday.

Green wins the honor for the second-straight week.

Green, a junior defensive back from Kingsland, Ga., finished with six tackles including two fumble recoveries in L-R's 34-6 win over Brevard last Saturday in Brevard.

Panthers offense goes cold in 16-12 loss to Seahawks

A chilly day at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday foreshadowed a cold performance from the Carolina Panthers offense against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Panthers (1-4) struggled against the No. 2 ranked Seahawks, tallying 190 yards of total offense in a 16-12 loss.

Quarterback Cam Newton completed 41 percent of his passes (12-of-29) for 141 yards and no touchdowns.

Henderson scores 19, Bobcats win preseason opener

Gerald Henderson scored 19 points and the Charlotte Bobcats held off a late rally to beat the Washington Wizards 100-88 in the teams' preseason opener Sunday.

Byron Mullens added 18 points, including a key 3-pointer down the stretch, and Ben Gordon had 16 for the Bobcats, who closed out the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season with a 23-game losing streak on the way to a league-worst 7-59 record.

Langer wins in tune-up for Greater Hickory Classic

Bernhard Langer rallied to win the SAS Championship on Sunday to take the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup points race, shooting a 9-under 63 to beat Jay Don Blake by two strokes

Four shots back entering the final round, Langer birdied the final two holes to finish at 13-under 203 at Prestonwood Country Club. The German star has two victories this year and 16 overall on the 50-and-over tour.

Panthers look to beat Seahawks, avoid 1-4 hole

You don't need to remind Steve Smith about the importance of beating Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

"It's beyond important — it's essential," Smith said.

Since Smith arrived in Carolina in 2001, the Panthers (1-3) have started the season 1-4 three times. None of them turned out particularly well.

That's not surprising.

QB Jackson helps push ASU past Elon, 35-23

Quarterback Jamal Jackson threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns, helping Appalachian State knock off Elon 35-23 during the Mountaineers' Homecoming game on Saturday in Boone.

Jackson's 300-yard passing game is the third of his career, as he moved into ninth all time in career passing yards at ASU (3,726).

Bears improve to 3-2, bounce Brevard, 34-6

The Lenoir-Rhyne football team picked up its first road win of the season in a 34-6 triumph over Brevard on Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference play.

L-R senior quarterback Reuben Haynes ran for two touchdowns and the Bears finished with 317 yards on the ground en route to their second-straight victory.

Taylor's TD, defensive stand lifts Maiden past Bandys

Ricky Taylor's five-yard touchdown run with 5:54 left in the third quarter helped Maiden defeat Bandys, 7-0, on the football field Friday.

The Blue Devils (5-3, 3-1) also made a defensive stand with 2:35 left in the game and kept the Trojans (5-3, 2-2) out of the end zone to hold on for the victory.

Red Devils keep pace in the CVAC, topple Bears

Both with identical 4-3 records entering Friday's conference contest, the Newton-Conover and Bunker Hill football teams were heading in different directions. That trend continued.

The Red Devils scored 31-straight points on their way to a 38-14 victory against the Bears.

After winning its third-straight game, Newton-Conover improves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A.

NWC 3A/4A ROUND UP: Indians, Bunting get 1st win

The St. Stephens football team picked up its first win of the season on Friday, knocking off North Buncombe in Weaverville, 20-10.

The Indians (1-7) pulled ahead 13-0 in the first quarter behind a 77-yard touchdown pass from Ky'Rawn Whitfield to Nic Kinson.

Saint's Martin Sutton added a four-yard run in the quarter.
