Saint swimmer Sava Turcanu commits to Harvard

A St. Stephens senior swimmer is heading to the Ivy League next fall.

Saint's Sava Turcanu has announced that he has committed to attend Harvard University after he graduates from high school this spring.

Turcanu has won three state titles at St. Stephens High School, including two at last year's 3A state meet in Cary.

The Bunker Hill soccer team received two goals each from Richard Xiong and Joel Hernandez to pick up a three-goal victory against Maiden on Thursday.

Xiong also made two assists, while Andres Chavez and Javier Chavez each recorded an assist for the Bears (8-8-1, 6-6-0).

The Blue Devils fall to 0-15 overall and 0-12 in the CVAC.

After tying 3-3 in a thrilling game earlier this season, the St. Stephens and Fred T. Foard soccer teams went to battle again on Wednesday night in Hickory.

Behind three goals from sophomore midfielder Nich Bryant, the Indians pulled ahead early and cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Tigers.

Lady Blue Devils claim first CVAC tourney title

For the first time in school history, the Maiden volleyball team captured a conference volleyball tournament title on Wednesday.

Senior Mckenzie Garrison tallied 24 kills, helping the Lady Blue Devils (19-4) to win in straight-sets (25-15, 25-12 and 25-23) over Newton-Conover to win the title.

N.C. State picked as ACC favorite at media day

For the first time in nearly four decades, North Carolina State enters the season as the Atlantic Coast Conference favorite.

The Wolfpack, with four starters back from a team that reached the NCAA round of 16, earned 26 of 53 first-place votes Wednesday from media members at the league's annual "Operation Basketball" media day.

Maiden, Newton-Conover advance to CVAC title game

The finals of the Catawba Valley 2A volleyball championship will feature two sets of Devils.

Maiden and Newton-Conover both picked up semifinal wins on Tuesday to advance to the Wednesday's title game at Maiden High School.

Greyson Frey's goal off of a Jake Lafrancis pass with five minutes to go helped the Newton-Conover soccer team pick up a 4-3 victory against Bandys in Catawba on Tuesday.

The win keeps Newton-Conover (11-4-1, 9-2-0) in second place in the CVAC standings, trailing only South Iredell by two games.

The Red Devils play at the Vikings on Thursday night.

TENNIS PLAYOFFS: Maiden advances, Bandys ousted

The first round of the 2A dual team girls tennis playoffs started on Tuesday with two Catawba County schools in action.

Maiden (17-1) avenged its only loss of the season by knocking off North Lincoln, 6-2. The Lady Blue Devils advance to face Salisbury (17-2) in the second round.

Bandys was shut out by Brevard, 9-0. The Lady Trojan's season ends at 13-4 overall.

Boyles repeats, Young wins girls title at CVAC meet

For the second time in as many weeks, cross-country athletes invaded Southside Park in Newton on Monday.

After last week's United Way Invitational, 147 athletes, including 92 boys and 55 girls, participated in the Catawba Valley 2A championships.
