Panthers top Dolphins in final preseason home game

The Carolina Panthers finished up their home preseason slate Friday with a 23-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Bank of America Stadium.

Less than a week after suffering a 26-13 loss to the Houston Texans in the preseason opener, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he was pleased with what he saw from his team.

In a game that featured three lead changes, two ties and three combined errors by both squads, Savannah got the better of Hickory on the baseball diamond Thursday.

Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the Sand Gnats (24-28 in the second half, 65-54 overall) powered ahead with a three-run homer by Yucarybert De La Cruz, pulling ahead for good en route to winning 6-5 at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The defending 2A state volleyball champion Newton-Conover Lady Red Devils opened their season with a loss Thursday at North Iredell, 25-12, 25-6 and 25-10.

The Lady Red Devils (1-0) play again this Saturday at Davidson College's volleyball tournament.

For the second time in three days, St. Stephens faced a Catawba Valley 2A squad and never blinked.

The Lady Indians (2-0) cruised to a 3-0 road victory over Maiden on Wednesday, two days after they shut out Bunker Hill at home by the same score.

AC Reynolds picked up a tight 3-2 victory over St. Stephens on the soccer field Wednesday in Hickory.

The Indians (1-1) were led by Tommy Vo and Osvaldo Crus, who each pocketed a goal in the contest.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — When Paul Wolfe decided to give NASCAR a try, he made sure he had a backup plan.

"I became a certified welder," Wolfe said. "I never really thought driving would ever provide me a chance. The opportunity to work on cars was more realistic. I wasn't really thinking about driving when I got into it."

It's good to be a realist.

Bandys senior Harvey ready for big game in Chicago

Bandys pitcher Hunter Harvey will compete with some of the best young baseball talent in the country this Saturday at the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field.

Harvey's selection to the All-America Game is his second biggest honor received in as many weeks.

After finishing 0-12 on the court a season ago, the St. Stephens tennis team picked up a hard-fought 5-4 victory against the Bunker Hill Bears on Tuesday in Claremont.

"This was a big win for the kids," said Lady Indians coach Todd Davis.

Higley, Suns walkoff on 'Dads in ninth inning, 4-3

HAGERSTOWN, MD. — Hagerstown stretched its advantage in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division to 1.5 games over the Hickory Crawdads with a dramatic 4-3 walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday.

Trailing 3-1 entering the ninth inning, Hickory (27-24 in the second half, 64-56 overall) tied the contest up on a pair of RBI singles from Jorge Alfaro and Alejandro Selen.
